The Gernet Centre was founded as a place where the structural method could be applied to the classics. ‘Structuralists’ attribute the survival, origin and function of myths to common crosscultural factors they identify as ‘structures’. As this book, first published as The Structuralists on Myth in 1992 explains, these structures are bundles of information not obvious either to the narrator or to the listener. The bundles are collected features that reveal either the reasons for the survival of myths, or their origins, or their functions within their contexts. The structuralists consider themselves to have talents as the collectors from myths of these bundles of information.

The first purpose of this volume is to make representative writings from the most eminent structuralist thinkers easily available. They represent a variety of fields and have, in a sense, pioneered a new approach; they are consequently interdisciplinary sources of valuable insights. The second purpose is to help place structuralism in a historical perspective. Marx, Freud, and Saussure are frequently ignored as precursors of present-day structuralism, and yet they developed many of the techniques used and elaborated upon by present scholars.

Literary Criticism And Myth written by Joseph Strelka and has been published by University Park : Pennsylvania State University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1980 with Literary Criticism categories.

The literary artist's use of myth is approached from three standpoints: general theoretical problems, special practical examples, and comparative theoretical trends. The relationship between an author's private myth and the myth that rises as the "spontaneous and anonymous creation of a whole people" ( in Baudelaire's phrase) is presented as an overall theme in Haskell Block's opening essay. Other broad theoretical issues covered are myth in poetry from the critic's viewpoint, and myth and anti-myth--with particular reference to Mann and Proust. Special examples are drawn from Rilke, Mallarme, and the Iliad as well as subsequent Greek and Roman literature. Among trends considered are Russian structuralist approaches to the fairy tale, French theories on Greek myth in modern drama, German mythopoesis, and Anglo-American critical attitudes.

Metamorphosis In Greek Myths written by Paul M. C. Forbes Irving and has been published by Oxford University Press, USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1990 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

The transformation of people into animals, plants, and stones is one of the most common and characteristic themes of Greek mythology, embodying as well some of the most mysterious and fantastic episodes in a mythology that is sometimes considered to be relatively realistic and lacking in fantasy. This book, the first study of these myths in English, analyzes the various ways in which they imagine and explore the experience of changing one's form. Irving's unusual approach is to look for their meaning not in long-forgotten rituals or historical events, but in their imaginative appeal as stories.
