The indicators in this bulletin are part of a national set of environmental indicators designed to provide a profile of the state of Canada's environment & measure progress towards sustainable development. A review of potential impacts on Canada shows that such changes would have wide-ranging implications for its economic sectors, social well-being including human health, & ecological systems. This document looks at the natural state of greenhouse gases which help regulate the Earth's climate. Then it looks at human influence & what we are doing about it. The document then examines some indicators: carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel use; global atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases; & global & Canadian temperature variations.

"The State of Canada's Environment - 1996 is Canada's third national state of the environment (SOE) report. As such, it continues the ongoing evolution in national environmental reporting that began several decades ago (...) The goal remained the same as it had been for the 1991 report: that is, to provide timely, accurate, and accessible environmental information, integrated with socioeconomic factors, to improve decision-making and support progress towards sustainability"--Preface.

Chapter I, "Environmental Quality," addresses such issues as air quality and atmospheric issues, water quality, the marine environment, land use patterns, and terrestrial biota. Chapter II, "Development and Environment," contains sections on population growth, human settlements, transport and tourism, agriculture and food production, industrial development and energy.
