It should be unnecessary to recognize the importance of Quality in the success of the company; however, although it may seem untrue, even today the real importance that it represents and that differentiates excellent companies from mediocre ones is not recognized. A company with a strong quality system, with a system correctly implemented in the GEMBA is unstoppable and will quickly achieve the objectives it sets, no matter how unattainable they may seem. The quality system is the backbone of the company, which, when perfectly organized, trained and oriented towards clear objectives, always moves forward like a Tsunami that sweeps everything away. There is nothing more powerful. It is a virtuous circle that improves and improves day by day with the participation of each and every one of the company's employees. Until reaching a state of real implementation of the total quality system, there are intermediate states in which not everything is so nice, in which some days we go forward and others backwards, especially if, as usually happens, the company grows quickly and there is no time to implement real quality in the GEMBA, there is no time to process customer orders, day-to-day problems take up everything, there is no time to plan the strategy to achieve the objectives, to follow the KPIs, to plan the new models, to train and coach staff, to carry out preventive maintenance, to analyze defects, to improve suppliers. Sometimes we wish everything would stop, that production would stop for a month so we could prepare projects, analyze complaints, plan quality. But nothing and no one is going to stop, on the contrary, everything is going like a runaway horse, out of control, clients visit us and the corrective actions we agreed upon are not carried out, the same quality problems arise again and again in production without us being able to do anything to avoid it. The situation has completely overwhelmed us. Does this situation sound familiar to you? If you are familiar with this, you will agree that there are basically two options: Option 1. Run away to wherever and don't look back Option 2. The Quality Revolution For the brave ones who choose option 2, this is why I am writing this book, to guide you with a real example. I warn you that option 2 is not easy, but it is possible. To be successful you must first forget everything that has been explained to you regarding quality, there is no greater quality than Total Quality management, quality on a grand scale, QUALITY with capital letters, quality without complexes, quality for the brave, the quality of the Samurai.

Quality is the major topic in international industry today, and its importance will increase in the 1990s. Making Quality Happen presents a common sense, step-by-step approach for implementing a Quality Improvement Process in any type of organization. The book utilizes 'Quality' as the strategic weapon that will help an organization achieve its overall objective by improving the organization's customer impact, reducing its cost structure, increasing its competitive market share, and maximizing its employee productivity. Importantly, the Quality Improvement Process detailed by McNealy makes Quality an integral part of any organization, and not an added or extraneous feature. Making Quality Happen is targeted at a broad audience of managers in all types of organizations around the world. The concepts and recommended actions expounded are directly applicable to, and have been implemented successfully in, large and small organizations in the public, private and non-profit sectors. This is a 'hands-on', action-oriented, instructive guide to implementing a Quality Improvement Effort. It is not a theoretical, overly technical, or academic treatise. Rather, it is a proven recipe for winning the Quality revolution.

Quality is generally understood as ‶fitness for use″ or ‶conforming to requirements″. However, a detailed understanding of quality concepts will indicate that it is not as simple as that. On the contrary, it is a concept with various facets and different applications in different contexts. A thorough understanding of it will yield great benefits. Already, the concept of quality has crept into our social life as ‶Quality Time″ and ‶Quality Life″, meaning the time or life spent in the most useful and enjoyable way, contributing to the wellness of individuals, society, and the surroundings. The implementation of Quality in Technology and Services will yield tremendous benefits, and a typical example is Japan, which grew from scratch to a developed nation after the Second World War by manufacturing quality products. It is quite justifiable to understand that if each one of us contributes to quality in whatever endeavour we pursue, we are contributing to the growth of our beloved great nation. It is heartening to note that there are already many Indian establishments that have bagged coveted international quality awards, indicating that we are progressing fast in the right direction in the quality arena. Essentially, with about thirty-six years of experience in the quality & reliability domain and its implementation as a project executive in the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), I feel that every one of us should have a very good understanding of quality concepts from experts for our benefit. Dr. P. Sasikumar, a practicing professional and respected expert in the area of Quality and Reliability in ISRO, who has already authored many good books in different fields, has taken the appropriate effort to help us understand and authored this book on Quality Concepts. In a simple and lucid manner, the author has explained the definitions, evolution of quality, ‶Quality Gurus″ benefits of quality & reliability, and the concepts for implementation in our day-to-day life. Appreciably, the author avoids abstract explanations but makes every reader understand even complex concepts tangibly through day-to-day life examples so that readers can practice these concepts in their professional and domestic lives. A useful book for all, including students and start-up entrepreneurs.
