From sash windows and ceramic tiles to barracks and warehouses, industrialized building has thrived since the nineteenth century in Europe and America. Yet architects have neglected this area of practical construction in favor of historical, theoretical, and artistic analyses, resulting in the emergence of an influential building industry with architects on the far margins. Colin Davies explores in The Prefabricated Home how the relationship between architecture and industrialized building has now become an urgent issue for architects. The Prefabricated Home outlines the methods and motives of prefabricated buildings and assesses their architectural implications. Davies traces the origins of the branded building phenomenon with examples ranging from the Dymaxion bathroom to IKEA's "Bo Klok" house. He also analyzes the use of industrialized buildings worldwide—including McDonald's drive-through restaurants and contrasts the aesthetic concerns of architects against the economic ones of industrialized building manufacturers. Ultimately, The Prefabricated Home proposes a partnership of architects and industrialized building that could potentially produce an exciting new type of humane and eco-conscious architecture.

At the end of the Second World War Winston Churchill promised to manufacture half a million prefabricated bungalows to ease the housing shortage; in the end more than 156,000 temporary 'prefabs' were delivered. Nicknamed 'Palaces for the People', and with convenient kitchens, bathrooms and heating systems, they proved popular and instead of being demolished as intended they were defended by residents who campaigned to keep their family homes and communities. Nearly seventy years later, as the last of these two bedroom homes are being demolished, Elisabeth Blanchet tells the story of these popular dwellings and their gardens and shows the various designs that were produced. Through the stories and memories of residents, she also reveals the communities who were pleased to live in the prefabs.

Prefabricated architecture is turning into one of the most important trends in the world of contemporary design. Architects and designers the world over have started to reinvent the prefabricated house, using new materials and construction techniques - such as shipping containers - which are easy to transport and construct, and can be installed in often surprising locations. Prefabricated houses also offer new ecological solutions and improved sustainability compared with traditional building systems, since they represent a more effective use of resources and a reduction in construction time. This superbly illustrated book presents prefabricated housing projects made from wood, recycled materials and recycled containers, all of which include step-by-step photographs and building plans along with assembly details.

Master's Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject Art - Architecture / History of Construction, Robert Gordon University Aberdeen, course: MSc. in Advanced Architectural Studies., language: English, abstract: This dissertation is concerned with the aesthetics of architecture using system building in housing in the UK. It has been produced in response to a growing level of interest in the system building method and in the aesthetic value of housing schemes constructed using the system building method. The aim here is to consider research on the system building methods within a house building context and test different types or categories of housing schemes based on aesthetic preference. This study explores issues of perception and level of aesthetic value. In general, aesthetics is the study of the psychological responses to beauty and artistic experiences. Aesthetics is the branch of philosophy which deals with the nature of art and of artistic judgment. Some of the central questions of aesthetics focus on the beautiful: under what circumstances it may be said to exist, what criteria are to be used to judge the beautiful, and whether or not these criteria apply equally to literature and music. There are two traditional views concerning what constitutes aesthetic values. The first finds beauty to be objective, that is, inherent in the entity itself. The second position holds that beauty is subjective, in that it depends on the attitude of the observer. Immanuel Kant argued that judgments of taste, as he called aesthetic judgments, rest on feelings, which, though subjective, have universal validity. The instrumental theory of value, an extension of subjectivism, holds that the value of art consists in its capacity to produce an aesthetic experience (Kristen L. Zacharias). System building leads to a faster completion period, well organized site, and better quality workmanship and most importantly offers major cost benefits for clients, architects and builders (Basri, 2006). This also means that the construction method is simplified and standardised and ensures good communication between the parties involved (Fergusson, 1981). For the purpose of this study the concept of system building is to be understood in its widest possible context.
