Excerpt from The Pedagogical Seminary, Vol. 24: A Quarterly International Record of Educational Literature Institution and Progress There is perhaps no more important problem for education than that of the physiological development of children during the school age. It would seem that the rate of growth sets a limit to learning beyond which the skill of the teacher can not go. For since the work of Porter (20) there has been good reason to believe that learning is not only conditioned by growth but that in these earlier years the rate of physiological maturing and that of mental development are closely related. Not only this early study but the later work of Smedley (24), Crampton (7), Goddard (13), Arnold (1) and others show that physical and mental retardation go together. The work of Gilbert (12) on the other hand would indicate that the reverse is true. Whether or not these differences in conclusions are due to technique and methods of classification is still a problem. It would seem that there ought to be a close agreement between the grade position of a pupil and the teacher's estimate of his ability, yet the conclusions of investigators using these two methods of classification are not in agreement. A preliminary investigation of the writer (9) using the grade age method of classification agreed in the main with the conclusions of Porter (20) and Smedley (24). It was noticed in this study that the vital indices of those children below grade averaged much lower than that of those above grade. A study was accordingly begun using the menial age as the basis of classification. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Pedagogical Seminary, Vol. 26: A Quarterly International Record of Educational Literature Institutions and Progress Sam stepped on the scales and registered a weight of 62 pounds. He was 53 inches tall. According to norms established by the investigations of Burk, Boas, etc., he should have weighed approximately 69 pounds. He was seven pounds underweight; that is, he was over 10% lighter than he should have been when compared with the average boy of his height. Another Sam, stepping on the scales, registered 118 pounds. He was 58 inches tall and, according to the normal standards, should have weighed not more than 85 pounds. He was 33 pounds, that is, more than 38% overweight. In this way 894 children had their percentage of overweight or underweight established. The distribution of 800 children is shown in Table I. Excerpt from The Pedagogical Seminary, Vol. 11: A Quarterly International Record of Educational Literature, Institutions and Progress Going still further back, the Eocene epoch shows many traces of flesh eaters which'may well have been the ancestors of the F elidae. According to Cope1 this position is most appro priately held by the Oxyaenidae, a family of several genera, which included the most formidable rapacious mammals of that early period in both continents. In the process of evolution the muscles of the jaws and the teeth have moved forward, at the same time the jaw has become shorter. This has resulted in bringing the power of the jaws to bear more prominently on the canine teeth. In the early carnivora, the jaws are much longer and support a larger number of teeth than in any of the modern families, and the fissure of the mouth was probably very wide and the last molar, a sectorial, while the canine teeth were evidently very ineffective as weapons. These animals probably only snapped with their jaws and did not attempt to Iacerate, or hold on as is so characteristic of the cat family. The dogs of to-day are an example of the long jawed type. They snap in a manner quite distinct from anything seen among cats. In the use of the canines for tearing, lacerating and holding on, which has evolved along with the Shortening of the jaw, we have derived one of the most typical characteristics of the Felidae.
