Naturalistic Behavior Of Nonhuman Primates written by Clarence Ray Carpenter and has been published by Penn State University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1965 with Nature categories.

Since 1950, there has been a sharp increase in interest among comparative anatomists, physiologists, biochemists, ecologists, and behavioral scientists in research on non-human primates. Recent advances in the study of genetics, evolution, and human prehistory have focused scientific attention on man's close relatives, the apes and monkeys. At the same time, the value of the naturalistic field study as a research tool and an adjunct to laboratory study has been increasingly recognized. This book brings together for the first time eight classic naturalistic field studies of non-human primates that have long been out of print. Because these pioneer investigations in primatology have been unavailable, contemporary scientists have undertaken research into many naturalistic behavior characteristics originally observed and described by the author in the 1930's and 1940's. His basic monographs on the howler monkeys of Panama, the gibbons of Thailand, the orangutans of Sumatra, and other monkey colonies are included, as well as discussions of the significance of the results of his research for human behavioral adaptations. These important monographs, with new introductions and conclusions by the author, will not only be of extreme interest to psychologists, zoologists, ecologists, anthropologists, and other life scientists but will also help to advance the scientific productivity of current field investigations.

While research has enabled us to better understand the nonhuman primates, they have repaid that by repaid that by providing medical scientists with important tools for the study of human biomedical problems. This book is about those research tools. The book was designed by identifying areas of human medical research that are under intensive research study today. Authors were then selected based on their expertise at using nonhuman primates as models for the human condition. Each was asked to use as comparative an approach as models for the human condition. Each was asked to use a comparative an approach as possible, to provide the reader with knowledge relating to the usefulness of various nonhuman primate species to each specific research area.

The International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) was estab lished in 1978 to stimulate and support scientific research and educational programs related to nutrition, toxicology, and food safety, and to encourage cooperation in these programs among scientists in universities, industry, and government agencies to assist in the resolution of health and safety issues. To supplement and enhance these efforts, ILSI has made a major commitment to supporting programs to harmonize toxicologic testing, to advance a more uniform interpreta tion of bioassay results worldwide, to promote a common understanding of lesion classifications, and to encourage wide discussion of these topics among scientists. The M on ographs on the Pathology of Laboratory Animals are de signed to facilitate communication among those involved in the safety testing of foods, drugs, and chemicals. The complete set will cover all organ systems and is intended for use by pathologists, toxicologists, and others con cerned with evaluating toxicity and carcinogenicity stud ies. The international nature of the project - as reflected in the composition of the editorial board and the diversity of the authors and editors - strengthens our expectations that understanding and cooperation will be improved worldwide through the series. Alex Malaspina President International Life Sciences Institute Preface This book on nonhuman primate pathology is the 12th volume of a set of monographs prepared under the sponsorship of the International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI).

This book provides a comprehensive look at nonhuman primate social inequalities as models for health differences associated with socioeconomic status in humans. The benefit of the socially-housed monkey model is that it provides the complexity of hierarchical structure and rank affiliation, i.e. both negative and positive aspects of social status. At the same time, nonhuman primates are more amenable to controlled experiments and more invasive studies that can be used in human beings to examine the effects of low status on brain development, neuroendocrine function, immunity, and eating behavior. Because all of these biological and behavioral substrates form the underpinnings of human illness, and are likely shared among primates, the nonhuman primate model can significantly advance our understanding of the best interventions in humans.

Behavior of Nonhuman Primates: Modern Research Trends focuses on research on the behavior of nonhuman primates, including social behavior, life history, and discrimination. The selection first offers information on the affectional systems and determinants of social behavior in young chimpanzees. Topics include infant-mother, maternal, age-mate or peer, and paternal affectional systems, social behavior of young chimpanzees, and the effects of arousal level on social responsiveness. The publication also takes a look at ontogeny of perception and learning and age changes in chimpanzees. Discussions focus on performance on formal tests of behavior, life history, classical conditioning, locomotion and manipulation, single-problem discrimination, and learning sets. The manuscript examines investigative behavior, as well as maintenance of behavior in nonhuman primates by investigatable rewards and determinants of investigative behavior. The publication also evaluates the radiation syndrome and field studies. The selection is a dependable reference for readers interested in the behavior of nonhuman primates.

Nonhuman Primates and Medical Research focuses on the contributions of nonhuman primates to biomedical research. The selection first elaborates on monkeys and yellow fever, cell cultures, and tuberculosis and bacterial infection. Discussions focus on bacterial diseases, tuberculosis, radiobiology, antibody formation and pharmacologic studies, cell-culture media and methods, the rhesus monkey and early history of yellow fever research, and monkeys and yellow fever in the future. The text then elaborates on virus research, models for investigation in parasitology, and primates as organ donors in transplantation studies in man. The manuscript examines the importance of monkeys for the study of malignant tumors in man; use of primates in cardiovascular research; and humanlike diseases in anthropoid apes. Topics include etiology of humanlike disease in anthropoid apes, atherosclerosis, historical aspects of primate research, selection of a suitable primate, and preeclampsia. The text also ponders on primate studies and human evolution and mental retardation. The selection is a valuable reference for researchers interested in the contributions of nonhuman primates to biomedical research.
