The wind howled through the valley, whispering through the pines as if mourning the lost. A thin mist curled over the hills of Gahau, swallowing the village in a ghostly embrace. Shiv stood at the edge of a ravine, his feet inches from the precipice, staring at the abyss below. The river had dried long ago, leaving behind only jagged stones and the echoes of what once flowed freely. Just like him. The city had taken everything—his strength, his dignity, even the light in his eyes. He had left these hills to prove he was more than his father’s shadow. Now, he returned with nothing but scars and debt, a whisper of the boy who had once dreamed beyond the mountains. The village had no place for him anymore. He saw it in their eyes—the murmurs, the pity, the silent judgment. He failed. The words clung to his skin like a damp cloth, suffocating, inescapable. The wind shifted, carrying a distant sound—the rustling of leaves, the faint murmur of voices from the village, the rhythmic creak of an old wooden door swinging open. Memories bled into the present. His mother’s laughter. His father’s stern gaze. The warmth of home before it turned into a grave. His fingers clenched. The stones beneath his feet crumbled, and for a moment, the weight of his body tilted forward. The riverbed waited below, silent, unfeeling. But then— A voice. Not from the past, but from the present. “Shiv.” Soft. Steady. A tether in the storm. He turned, and there she was. Paru. The only one who had never turned away. Her eyes held no judgment, no pity. Only understanding. The wind howled again, but this time, it did not pull him forward. The river may have dried, but it was not lost. Not yet. And neither was he. The Lost River introduces Shiv, a young man from the small, rural village of Gahau in Himachal Pradesh, whose life is forever changed after losing his parents in a tragic accident. In an attempt to escape the weight of his responsibilities, he moves to Chandigarh, hoping to build a better life. However, life in the city proves to be far more challenging than he anticipated. Shiv struggles to adapt to urban life, facing the alienation of being an outsider in a fast-paced, modern world. His dreams crumble as he loses his job, and the money he borrowed to pursue a new career only drives him deeper into debt. Desperate, he returns to Gahau, broken and defeated, only to find that the debt left behind by his father is overwhelming and that the village that once felt like home is now a place of harsh judgment and gossip. Amid his despair, Paru, a nurse from Chandigarh with a similar emotional turmoil, learns of Shiv’s plight through mutual acquaintances. Paru, though struggling with her crumbling marriage, decides to help Shiv, knowing that he would never ask for help. She sets up a crowdfunding campaign for him, rallying support from her friends, but this gesture is met with unexpected humiliation as a stranger twists Shiv’s story to garner sympathy. This incident causes a rift between Shiv and Paru, and he angrily cuts all ties with her, unable to understand the true intent behind her kindness. As Shiv’s isolation deepens, he is faced with the harsh reality of his situation—his father’s debts, his failure in the city, and the brokenness of his own heart. Yet, despite his despair, a small spark of hope keeps him going, leading him to find unexpected support from an NGO. This organization offers him a job and a chance to rebuild, but the road ahead is still uncertain. The story ends with Shiv taking his first tentative steps toward healing, unsure of what the future holds, but with the realization that the journey ahead will require him to confront both his past and his deepest fears.

Excerpt from The Lost River While wandering among the mountains they met a veteran miner - Jarvis Metcalf - who had gone thither to look for a rich deposit Of gold. That which led him to make this venture was a paper given to him by an Old friend, named Covington, just before he died, which paper contained the drawing of three mountain peaks, with a short, winding stream at the base. Could these landmarks be found, there would be no trouble in locating the spot where the treasure was said to exist. The doubt in the whole matter lay in the fact that the miner who made the drawing and wrote Out the directions had been clouded in his mind most of the time, and it was probable that the whole thing was a freak of his twisted brain.
