The whole problem of our time is the problem of love. How are we going to recover the ability to love ourselves and to love one another? We cannot be at peace with others because we are not at peace with ourselves, and we cannot be at peace with ourselves because we are not at peace with God. There is a distinction between a contrite sense of sin and a feeling of guilt. The former is a true and healthy thing, the latter tends to be false and pathological. The man who suffers from a sense of guilt does not want to feel guilty, but at the same time he does not want to be innocent. He wants to do what he thinks he must not do, without the pain of worrying about the consequences. The history of our time has been made by dictators whose characters, often transparently easy to read, have been full of repressed guilt. They have managed to enlist the support of masses of men moved by the same repressed drives as themselves. Modern dictatorships display everywhere a deliberate and calculated hatred for human nature as such. The technique of degradation used in concentration camps and in staged trials are all too familiar in our time. They have one purpose: to defile the human person.

John 6:3 And Jesus went up to the mountain and sat there with His disciples. 4 Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was near. 5 Jesus then lifting up His eyes and seeing that a great crowd was coming toward Him, said to Philip, Where shall we buy bread that these may eat? 6 But this He said to test him, for He Himself knew what He was about to do. 7 Philip answered Him, Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that each one may take a little. 8 One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peters’ brother, said to Him, 9 There is a little boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish… 10 …So the men reclined, in number about five thousand. 11 Jesus then took the loaves, and when He had given thanks, He distributed to those who were reclining; likewise also of the fish, as much as they wanted. 12 And when they were filled, He said to His disciples, Gather the broken pieces left over that nothing may be lost. 13 So they gathered them and filled twelve hand baskets with broken pieces from the five barley loaves which were left over among those who had eaten (John 6:3-13). We live in a troubled world. The world is altogether troublesome. Family life, school life, and every type of occupation—all are troublesome. Who is at peace—the president, the senators, the congressmen? No one is at peace. Regardless of who you are, you are troubled. We all have troubles. John 6:17 And they got into a boat and began crossing the sea to Capernaum. 18 And because a strong wind was blowing, the sea was churning. 19…they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they became frightened. 20 But He said to them, It is I. Do not be afraid. The sea represents Satan’s organized and systematized world where humanity is occupied and enveloped. In the world corrupted by Satan there is no real satisfaction; there is always hunger. Neither is there any peace, for the wind and the waves are always on the sea making trouble for man. Christ comes into this troublesome world as the peace-giving Christ (John 6:16-21). John Chapter 6 not only portrays the hungry world, but also the troubled world. Christ is the feeding Christ to the hungry world and the peace-giving Christ to the troubled world. The world may trouble everyone, but it cannot trouble Him! Day by day the whole world is seeking to be satisfied with many things like entertainment, amusement and pleasure which can never fill their hunger. They work year by year for the food that perishes. “Work not for the food which perishes, but for the food which abides unto eternal life,” (John 6:27a). Are you hungry? Will you take in Christ as the food that abides unto eternal life?
