These studies deal with Arabic epitaphs within the culture, society and intellectual and religious history of Islam on the basis of the edited epigraphic material and literary sources. They aim at filling a gap in a hitherto neglected field in the wider realm of Arabic and Islamic studies and will contribute to a deeper understanding of the Islamic attitudes towards death, afterlife, burial, mortuary cult, memory and the relations between the worlds of the living and the dead. In Volume I it is the epitaphs which are to the fore. Additionally, various literary sources are cited in order to enlarge the basis for research, to determine the phraseological conventions and to elucidate the religious, mental and social background of funerary epigraphy. In some sections, epitaphs written in Hebrew and Turkish have also been taken into account for the sake of comparison with the Arabic material.Volume II deals with the social and material aspects of Islamic burial sites and funerary monuments, which form the wider context of Arabic funerary epigraphy.Moreover, all kinds of literary sources, including the important genre of Arabic visitation and cemetery guides, have been given ample attention. This volume also comprises a catalogue of epitaphs and epitaph-poems cited in Arabic literary sources.

Jahrhunderts unternommen. Ein Schwerpunkt liegt dabei auf verbaler Interaktion und der dialogischen, streitbaren und mehrdeutigen Rede als einem zentralen Motiv mundlicher Uberlieferung, fur die die in Athiopien bekannten Gabra-Hanna-Anekdoten exemplarisch sind. 70 amharische Texte um den geistlichen Gelehrten und scharfzungigen Spotter wurden in den Band aufgenommen, ubersetzt, kommentiert und bezuglich ihrer Motive von Ambiguitat und deren verbaler Umsetzung analysiert. Die Erkenntnisse aus dieser Untersuchung belegen, dass Ambiguitat in der hierarchischen Gesellschaft eine besondere Relevanz besass und indirekte Kommunikation wichtige soziale Funktionen erfullte. Wo uber Bedeutungen verhandelt werden kann und muss, sind auch Elemente von Flexibilitat zu erkennen, die ein neues Licht auf die Bewertung von Ambiguitat im historischen Athiopien werfen.

Der arabische Begriff Hadith bezeichnet eine Überlieferung, die eine Aussage des Propheten Muhammad (gest. 632) mitteilt oder von einer Handlung des Propheten berichtet. Das Wissen um die Überlieferungsketten und die Sammlung von Hadithen wurden bald ein zentraler Bestandteil muslimischer Gelehrsamkeit. Darüber hinaus erfüllten gerade die Hadithe den Anspruch des Islam, den Gläubigen einen modellhaften Lebensentwurf anzubieten, der alle Aspekte des Alltags und des gesamten Lebens umfaßt: "Im Gottgesandten habt ihr doch ein schönes Beispiel" (Koran 33:21.) Der berühmte syrische Gelehrte Yahya ibn Sharaf al-Nawawi (1233-1277) traf aus der umfangreichen Hadithliteratur eine pointierte Auswahl, die er das Buch der vierzig Hadithe nannte und das die zentralen Lehren des Islam beinhaltet: "Jeder dieser vierzig Hadithe ist ein gewaltiger Pfeiler von den Pfeilern der Religion. Von jedem dieser Hadithe haben Gelehrte verschiedentlich gesagt, er sei der Dreh- und Angelpunkt des Islam oder er enthalte die halbe Glaubenslehre des Islam oder ein Drittel davon oder doch etwas Vergleichbares." Bis heute stellt das Buch der vierzig Hadithe eine Art Katechismus des islamischen Glaubens dar, es ist in allen islamischen Ländern populär. Die neue Ausgabe bringt neben der Übersetzung der Hadithe an-Nawawis Einleitung und seine ausführlichen Erläuterungen. Sie werden ergänzt durch eine Übersetzung des Kommentars von Ibn Daqiq al-id, eines der ältesten Kommentare zum Buch der vierzig Hadithe. Zusammen mit dem Kommentar des Herausgebers dieser Ausgabe zeigt der Band damit sowohl die muslimische als auch die westliche Perspektive auf eine der berühmtesten Hadithsammlungen.
