Eighty per cent of the world's gross domestic product belongs to the 1 billion people living in the developed world; the remaining 20 per cent is shared by the 5 billion people living in developing countries. Failure to address this inequality predicament will ensure that social justice and better living conditions for all people remain elusive, and that communities, countries and regions remain vulnerable to social, political and economic upheaval. This report traces trends and patterns in economic and non-economic aspects of inequality and examines their causes and consequences. It focuses on the traditional aspects of inequality, such as the distribution of income and wealth, as well as inequalities in health, education, and opportunities for social and political participation. The report also analyses the impact of structural adjustment, market reforms, globalization and privatization on economic and social indicators. The Report identifies four areas of particular importance. First, worldwide asymmetries deriving from globalization need to be redressed. Second, the goal of reducing inequality must be explicitly incorporated in policies and programmes aimed at poverty reduction. Third, priority must be given to expanding and improving opportunities for employment. Finally, social integration and cohesion must be promoted as key to development, peace and security.

Pacific Island countries are undergoing fundamental political and economic changes due to the process of globalisation. Many of them are struggling to come to grips with the global economic challenges of participating in a world of freer trade. Their smallness, distance from the major markets and vulnerability to natural disasters presents special challenges. Globalisation, however, also provides a window of opportunity for some of them to improve their economic growth performance through increasing exports, investment and technological advancement and labour mobility. This book deals with a number of important issues relevant for improving the economic growth performances of the Pacific Island countries. Good governance, developing appropriate and quality institutions to promote investment and exports are major challenges for most of them. In addition, the volume also provides case studies discussing the role of foreign aid, remittances and labour mobility, role of the agricultural sector, role of the informal sector, management of public finances, and the state of the public sector reform.

The failure of development strategies in the past few decades has given rise to a worldwide movement in the direction of "another development." This is a form of development that is social as well as economic, oriented towards people's basic needs, people-centred and initiated from below. It is human in scale and form, equitable and socially more inclusive, capacitating and empowering of the poor, sustainable in terms of both the environment and livelihoods, participatory and community-based. This concern for another development is a major theme of this book, which includes a series of analytical probes into the dynamics of social change-its theory and practice.

Ideal for use in all Nuclear Issues, American Foreign Policy, International Relations, Global Issues, and Contemporary History courses at the undergraduate level. Thoroughly revised to reflect the changes that the end of the cold war has brought to nuclear issues and to examine our new nuclear future, this interdisciplinary text shows how nuclear weapons have changed the world militarily, politically, socially, and ethically. Seeking to shake readers out of their nuclear complacency, it fully examines the evolving nuclear predicament (that nuclear weapons can be massively destructive, yet we are moving into a period when nuclear weapons are more likely to be used) and considers particular strategies to cope with and shape the nuclear future.
