The global ocean is in trouble — and kids can help! Though we think of Earth’s five oceans as separate and distinct, they are actually a linked system of circulating water that is one single ocean — the global ocean. This comprehensive overview explores the global ocean’s enormous influence on the planet, as well as humans’ often-detrimental influence on the ocean. But it also highlights many inspiring initiatives underway to restore and heal Earth’s most important feature, making its message of urgency as hopeful as it is accurate. Kids will happily dive into these beautiful pages to learn about our magnificent global ocean — and what they can do to help save it!

The world's oceans make up 99 per cent of the living space on our planet and are home to more than half of all the earth's creatures. They are our life support, regulating the global climate — and when this delicate ecosystem is threatened, so is our survival. The first book to look at the planetary environmental crisis through the lens of the global ocean, Seasick dives down on a journey through the planet's hidden realms. Each chapter features a different group of researchers who explore the importance of ocean currents, the effects of acidification or the extinction of marine species. With award-winning journalist Alanna Mitchell at the helm, readers submerge 3000 feet to gather sea sponges that may help to cure cancer, see first-hand the lava lamp-like 'dead zone' covering 17,000 square kilometres in the Gulf of Mexico, and witness the simultaneous spawning of corals under a full moon in Panama. Seasick will give you a new reverence for the source of all life on earth.

This book presents the views of leading scientists on the knowledge of the global ocean circulation following the completion of the observational phase of the World Ocean Circulation Experiment. WOCE's in situ physical and chemical measurements together with satellite altimetry have produced a data set which provides for development of ocean and coupled ocean-atmosphere circulation models used for understanding ocean and climate variability and projecting climate change. This book guides the reader through the analysis, interpretation, modelling and synthesis of this data.

The essential introduction to modern physical oceanography With the advent of computers, novel instruments, satellite technology, and increasingly powerful modeling tools, we know more about the ocean than ever before. Yet we also have a new generation of oceanographers who have become increasingly distanced from the object of their study. Ever fewer scientists collect the observational data on which they base their research. Instead, many download information without always fully understanding how far removed it is from the original data, with opportunity for great misinterpretation. This textbook introduces modern physical oceanography to beginning graduate students in marine sciences and experienced practitioners in allied fields. Real observations are strongly emphasized, as are their implications for understanding the behavior of the global ocean. Written by a leading physical oceanographer, Modern Observational Physical Oceanography explains what the observational revolution of the past twenty-five years has taught us about the real, changing fluid ocean. Unlike any other book, it provides a broad and accessible treatment of the subject, covering everything from modern methods of observation and data analysis to the fluid dynamics and modeling of ocean processes and variability. Fully illustrated in color throughout, the book describes the fundamental concepts that are needed before delving into more advanced topics, including internal-inertial waves, tides, balanced motions, and large-scale circulation physics. Provides an accessible introduction to modern physical oceanography Written by a leading physical oceanographer Emphasizes real observations of the fluid ocean Features hundreds of color illustrations An online illustration package is available to professors

You thought the climate was the problem? Actually, it's the ocean. Read for the first time how the global ocean - 99 per cent of the planet's living space - is undergoing vast chemical changes at the hand of man and why that matters. While tremendous attention and money have been devoted to saving animals and plants on land, the deterioration of the oceans has been going on in secret, and scientists are just beginning to understand the extent of the crisis. Seasick is the first comprehensive account which pieces together the latest discoveries, theories and findings. What are we doing to the seas? What does this mean to the future of life on earth? Seasick will explain. Written by a journalist who has traveled around the world to provide the big picture, this book will forever change the way you see your planet. This is ecology at its best, as well as a thrilling adventure story.

The Global Ocean Observing System is a study by the Ocean Studies Board intended to provide information and advice to federal agencies (the U.S. GOOS Interagency ad hoc Working Group) to help define and implement an effective, affordable, and customer-based U.S. contribution to GOOS. In particular, the committee was asked to provide advice to U.S. agencies regarding a practical concept for GOOS, identify potential applications and users of GOOS during the next 3 to 5 years and beyond, recommend appropriate roles for industry and academia in GOOS, and prioritize observational and infrastructure activities that should be undertaken or continued by the United States in its initial commitments to GOOS. In response to its charge, the committee reviewed the status of GOOS planning and implementation at both the national and international levels, invited presentations by relevant federal agencies and members of the private sector, and examined the range of potential uses and benefits of products derived from information to be collected by GOOS. Finally, the committee drew upon this information and its own expertise to develop a number of recommendations intended to help move the implementation of GOOS forward.
