Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is an international phenomenon, with a fascinatingly diverse and complex history that stems from fighting sports around the world. In Mixed Martial Arts: A History from Ancient Fighting Sports to the UFC, L.A. Jennings explores the vast global history of martial arts-including Asian martial arts, African fighting sports, European pugilism and wrestling, and the fighting styles of North, Central, and South Americas-and how they gave rise to the modern sport of MMA. Jennings shares some of the most famous moments in fighting history alongside stories of the fighters themselves, such as the infamous 1976 fight between Muhammad Ali and Antonio Inoki. When the Ultimate Fighting Championship premiered in 1993, it introduced the world to the controversial “cage fighting” at a scale never seen before. With the assistance of technological innovations and globalization, MMA has become the fastest growing sport on earth, the culmination of thousands of years of fighting for sport. Featuring fascinating stories and photographs of fighters from around the world, Mixed Martial Arts reveals the long and captivating history of this often-misunderstood sport.

For thousands of years, the martial arts has been developed throughout the world and has continued to fascinate mankind in many cultures. Even today, the martial arts is always evolving and producing great pioneers in the sport. I use the term sport loosely, since I dont like the idea of the martial arts having become watered down as a result of the training methods, specifically for sport competition. The purpose of this book is to try and bring to the mind of the martial arts practitioner the real purpose of the development of the fighting arts, which is self-defense.

Myths and Blind Spots in the Fighting Arts' World #1 Learning to defend yourself through training in martial arts, combatives or combat sports, is a wise thing to do, but being wise while doing it, is not all that easy. While it does depend on you, it firstly depends on your instructors, and even on their instructors... This being the case, human factors like ignorance, arrogance, "indenialism" (I call it), deception, hastiness, idolatry, fanaticism and more, hinder the truth to various degrees from reaching the practitioners, thus compromising their necessary survival fighting skills. For this reason, this book strives to bring clarity and reality where those are absent, to bring balance where there is exaggeration or falsehood; when learning to mentally and physically resist an attacker or attackers, there can't be any room for wrong use of the body's weapons, for naivety, silliness, fantasy or a playful mentality. This in turn means, that in order to protect yourself and loved ones, the theories and training methods you use for that purpose, should be able, must be able, TO BE PROVEN 100% accurate, if ever physically attacked. A large order indeed, a huge responsibility and a moral burden for sincere hard working, dedicated instructors. So, there is knowledge to be gained from this book and wisdom to be discerned. It's therefore a book for free thinkers, for truth lovers, I'd even add, for the brave, but it's definitely not for mere "reactors" that see things through the lens of emotionalism, convenience, self-benefit, immaturity, or inexperience. While it's not a Christian book, I am still a dedicated Christian, so it's still a... Christian's book. I am glad and thankful to God, to be both a Christian and a Christian martial artist; Psalm 144:1-2 is true in my life, just like so many other passages from the Bible. And why is this relevant, you may in all fairness ask. Because my faith and beliefs are apparent here and there in this book and especially in a particular chapter where I elaborate on Christianity's, actually God's perspective on self-defense and violence and this, firstly for my Christian family members and then of course for all other practitioners; they too may gain a lot from that perspective. It's unfortunately true, that it's not a topic that many would expect a Christian to write about, but why not? The answer in essence, in that chapter. Another dimension of this book, is my Christian sense of humor; don't say I didn't warn you! Therefore the full blend you should expect to find in this book is fourfold: fighting arts, wisdom, Christianity and humor. All of those, to hopefully bring necessary change, where it is needed and of course... is still wanted or/and allowed... ―DISCLAIMER: If you are somehow offended by the Gospel of Jesus Christ that calls people to repent and be saved from eternal hell or Christian theology in general, my friendly advice is, do not waste your money and time buying this book. There are good martial art books out there waiting for you, written by atheists, so you can buy theirs and reject this one if you feel you cannot tolerate such beliefs. Thank you for understanding, I appreciate it and no hard feelings.

Become a Better Martial Artist by Applying Lessons from the World's Greatest Military Strategists from Sun Tzu to Von Clausewitz Lessons in the Art of War investigates the theories and philosophies of the most prominent military thinkers in Asia and Europe and examines the combat roots of a variety of fighting styles from traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Korean martial arts to the fighting arts of the ancient Greeks and modern Israelis. It also demonstrates how the martial arts, whether Asian or Western in origin, were historically about brutal fighting, often to the death, and how ancient attitudes and beliefs can be adapted for success in today's MMA steel cage, judo or karate tournament as they were in ancient armies. Including an introduction to Asian and Western military thought, chapters include: The Nature and Conduct of Combat What is Combat? Preparing for Battle Elements of Tactics and Strategy Imposing Your Will Destroying the Enemy Force Strength of the Defensive Position Failure Moral Quality of Courage Securing Victory
