Today - six years after it was created in a Harvard dorm room - over 500 million people use Facebook regularly, in just about every country on earth. That a company this powerful and influential was started as a lark by a couple of 19-year-olds makes it a fascinating and surprising tale. That one of them, the visionary Mark Zuckerberg, had the maturity, strategic smarts and luck to keep his company ahead of its rivals anchors the tale. With exclusive inside access to all the company's leaders David Kirkpatrick tells of the vision, the tenacity, the refusal to compromise, and the vision Zuckerberg has to remake the internet. A brilliant and fascinating cast of characters created Facebook and Kirkpatrick has interviewed all of them. Never before have Zuckerberg and his closest colleagues told what really happened as they built their dynamo while eating fast food, staying up all night, and thumbing their noses at how things are usually done.

In August, 2008, Facebook signed up its 100 millionth user. Eight months later its 200 millionth user signed up. Today it is closing in on 250 million users. This phenomenal growth rate is unprecedented and shows the allure and power of Facebook. David Kirkpatrick traces the story from its origins in Mark Zuckerberg's dorm room at Harvard, where a handful of 19-year-olds devised a way for Harvard students to connect with one another, then with other Ivy League students, then college students more generally, and so on until it became the #1 social networking site on the internet that it is today.

This is the inside story of one of the greatest business and social tales of our time. Drawing on his exclusive inside access, Kirkpatrick tells the story of the handful of friends who came together to make Facebook work, the falling - out among some of them, and the lawsuits over Facebook, threatened and real, that have made news. He describes from the inside the vision, the tenacity, the refusal to compromise, and the immaturity, that have made the company what it is. Throughout it all Zuckerberg has refused to compromise his vision of putting growth first and making Facebook a platform for using the internet. Kirkpatrick shows how users around the world have made Facebook a part of the social and political culture of the 21st century, organsing protests against the FARC in Colombia on Facebook and, more recently, against the 2009 Iranian election.
