Research on the development of human infants has revealed remarkable capacities in recent years. Instead of stressing the limitations of the newborn, the modern approach is now more optimistically based on an assessment of the adaptive capabilities of the infant. Innate endowment, coupled with interaction with the physical and social environment, enables a developmental transition from processes deeply rooted in early perception and action to the cognitive and language abilities typical of the toddler.; This book reviews a number of issues in early human development. It includes a reconceptualization of the role of perception at the origins of development, a reconciliation of psychophysical and ecological approaches to early face perception, and building bridges between biological and psychological aspects of development in terms of brain structure and function. Topics covered include basic exploratory processes of early visual systems in early perception and action; face perception in newborns, species typical aspects of human communication, imitation, perception of the phonetic structure of speech, origins of the pointing gesture, handedness origins and development, theoretical contributions on perception and cognition, implicit and explicit knowledge in babies; sensory-motor coordination and cognition, information processing and cognition, perception, habituation and the development of intelligence from infancy.

Despite early speculations that young infants are unable to form memories, since the 1950s developmental scientists have documented amazing memory abilities in infancy and explored how these abilities develop. This research on memory development in infancy and early childhood has recently moved in exciting new directions. Extensions of work on memory systems in adults and the use of behavioral and neuroscience methods to study early developing memory abilities have lead to an explosion of ideas about the neural underpinnings of memory, its development, and the mechanisms involved in these developmental changes. This book focuses on recent empirical and theoretical advances in the study of memory development in infancy and early childhood and on mechanisms of developmental change. Its chapters allow readers to compare and contrast contemporary views of memory development, and gain an understanding of what we do and do not yet know about how memory develops in early childhood.

Neuroconstructivism Perspectives And Prospects written by Denis Mareschal and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with Computers categories.

What are the processes, from conception to adulthood, that enable a single cell to grow into a sentient adult? The processes that occur along the way are so complex that any attempt to understand development necessitates a multi-disciplinary approach, integrating data from cognitive studies, computational work, and neuroimaging - an approach till now seldom taken in the study of child development. Neuroconstructivism is a major new 2 volume publication that seeks to redress this balance, presenting an integrative new framework for considering development. Computer and robotic models provide concrete tools for investigating the processes and mechanisms involved in learning and development. Volume 2 illustrates the principles of 'Neuroconstructivist' development, with contributions from 9 different labs across the world. Each of the contributions illustrates how models play a central role in understanding development. The models presented include standard connectionist neural network models as well as multi-agent models. Also included are robotic models emphasizing the need to take embodiment and brain-system interactions seriously. A model of Autism and one of Specific Language Impairment also illustrate how atypical development can be understood in terms of the typical processes of development but operating under restricted conditions. This volume complements Volume 1 by providing concrete examples of how the 'Neuroconstructivist' principles can be grounded within a diverse range of domains, thereby shaping the research agenda in those domains.

Child And Adolescent Development written by Danuta Bukatko and has been published by Houghton Mifflin this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Education categories.

This new chronological edition is based on the well-established topically organized text by Bukatko and Daehler,Child Development: A Thematic Approach,5/e. Addressing physical, social, and emotional development in a linear fashion, this text starts with pre-natal development and progresses through birth and the newborn baby, infancy and toddlerhood, early childhood, middle childhood, and adolescence. Developed to accommodate the more applied focus of courses in nursing, parenthood, education, family studies, and human ecology, this text benefits from the authors' focus on research through an emphasis on developmental themes. Five themes on development are found in every chapter and are listed in the chapter opener, called out in the margin where the theme is addressed, and summarized in aSummary of Developmental Themessection at the end of the chapter. The five themes explore nature and nurture; sociocultural contexts; continuous vs. discontinuous development; the domains of development; and risk or resilience in development. Extensive "Contexts of Development" chapters for each development stage broaden the scope of the issues discussed by examining the child/adolescent within the context of family, peers, and community. Research Applied to Parenting/Educationboxes provide practical advice based on research findings and cover such topics as reducing SIDS, monitoring TV viewing, reciprocal teaching, and reading to children. Atypical Developmentsections focus on topics related to non-normative development, including eating disorders, autism, attention deficit disorder, detecting hearing loss, depression, conduct disorders, and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Summary Tablesare two-page graphic timelines that summarize the various milestones of development and show the sequence of the child's development within a given domain (infancy, early childhood, middle childhood, adolescence). Chapter-Opening Vignettesdraw students into real-life scenarios by applying and exploring concepts of development. Marginal features,See for YourselfandWhat Do You Think?,invite students to critically evaluate and explore further related material on the Online Study Center. Additional pedagogy includes section summaries within each chapter and comprehensiveChapter Recapsthat feature aSummary of Developmental Themes,aChapter Review, and a list ofKey Terms and Concepts.
