This volume is concerned with the origins, development and character of ritual in Islam. The focus is upon the rituals associated with the five 'pillars of Islam': the credal formula, prayer, alms, fasting and pilgrimage. Since the 19th century academic scholarship has sought to investigate Muslim rituals from the point of view of history, the study of religion, and the social sciences, and a set of the most important and influential contributions to this debate, some of them translated into English for the first time, is brought together here. Participation in the ritual life of Islam is for most Muslims the predominant expression of their adherence to the faith and of their religious identity. The Development of Islamic Ritual shows some of the ways in which this important aspect of Islam developed to maturity in the first centuries of Islamic history.

The fourteen studies included in The Formation of Islamic Law have been chosen to serve several purposes simultaneously. At a basic level, they provide a general - if not wholly systematic - coverage of the emergence and evolution of law during the first three and a half centuries of Islam. On another level, they reflect the different and, at times, widely divergent scholarly approaches to this subject matter. These two levels combined will offer a useful account of the rise of Islamic law not only for students in this field but also for Islamicists who are not specialists in matters of law, comparative legal historians, and others. At the same time, however, and as the Introduction to the work argues, this collection of distinguished contributions illustrates both the achievements and the shortcomings of paradigmatic scholarship on the formative period of Islamic law.

A History Of The Modern Middle East written by William L Cleveland and has been published by Westview Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000 with History categories.
This comprehensive work provides a penetrating analysis of modern Middle Eastern history, from the Ottoman and Egyptian reforms, through the challenge of Western imperialism, to the Iranian Revolution and the Gulf War. After introducing the reader to the region's history from the origins of Islam in the seventh century, Cleveland focuses on the past two centuries of profound and often dramatic change. While built around a framework of political history, the book also carefully integrates social, cultural, and economic developments into a single, carefully crafted account. The revised and updated second edition of this benchmark text includes information on the Middle East since the close of the Cold War, and a new section on civil society and Islamic politics in the 1990s.

This volume presents a selection of the key studies in which leading scholars explain the phenomenally rapid expansion of the early Islamic state during the 7th century CE. The articles debate the causes for the conquest movement, the reasons for its success, its nature and the impact it had on affected countries, and the complex questions surrounding the sources on which historians have constructed their views of the expansion and the reliability of those sources. The editor's introduction addresses the phenomenon of the expansion and how scholars have approached it.

Muslims And Others In Early Islamic Society written by Robert G. Hoyland and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with History categories.
Muslims and Others in Early Islamic Society concerns the interaction between Muslims and the other religious denominations of the Middle East in the period 620-1020. This is arguably the single most important issue in the history of the early Islamic Middle East, since the Muslims were initially a minority in the lands that they had conquered and so had to reach some modus vivendi with the various religious communities in their realm. Fifteen articles by leading scholars shed light on this process from a number of different perspectives: historical, conceptual, legal, social and theological. An introduction both gives an overview and examines possibilities for future research. The period under study is demarcated at one end by the Prophet Muhammed (d. 632) who, as the Qur'an tells us, had to deal with Jews, Christians and polytheists. At the other end lies the great legal/political thinker Manardi (d. ca. 1020), by whose time the Middle East had become substantially Islamicised.

Production and the Exploitation of Resources, together with its companion Manufacturing and Labour, examines the economic basis of the early Islamic world, looking at the organization of extractive and agricultural operations, manufacturing processes and labour relations.Mining, stock raising, agriculture and irrigation are the themes of this volume. The work is based on both literary sources and archaeology, and is concerned with the extraction of raw materials and production based on natural resources and domesticated animals. Some classic articles are included because they defined the issues and deserve to be available due to their continuing significance. These are balanced by "state-of-the art" studies, and by others translating and commenting on important texts in areas where analytic studies have yet to be carried out. This body of work provides a sense of the intensity of exploitation of natural resources in early Islamic times, of how labour and energy-intensive mining, agriculture and irrigation were, and of the interrelationship of different sectors of the economy.

A history of the ceremony of the oath of allegiance to the caliph from the time of the Prophet Muhammad until the fragmentation of the caliphate in the late 9th and 10th centuries.Blurb by author: Rituals of Islamic Monarchy is the first full-length study of the rituals by which the caliphs were made rulers of the early Muslim empire. It is an original contribution to scholarship on early Islam and the Middle East, which gives important insights into the formation of classical Islamic culture and civilisation. It clearly sets out the particular evidential problems of early Islamic history and identifies strategies for overcoming them. It also engages with the problem of how Islamic history relates to the history of the pre-Islamic Middle East, arguing for the importance of the pre-Islamic, Arabian context of early Islam, as well as a wider perspective that takes in the legacy of the pre-Islamic empires of Rome and Iran.
