The Democracy Sourcebook offers a collection of classic writings and contemporary scholarship on democracy, creating a book that can be used by undergraduate and graduate students in a wide variety of courses, including American politics, international relations, comparative politics, and political philosophy. The editors have chosen substantial excerpts from the essential theorists of the past, including Jean-Jacques Rousseau, John Stuart Mill, Alexis de Tocqueville, and the authors of The Federalist Papers; they place them side by side with the work of such influential modern scholars as Joseph Schumpeter, Adam Przeworski, Seymour Martin Lipset, Samuel P. Huntington, Ronald Dworkin, and Amartya Sen. The book is divided into nine self-contained chapters: "Defining Democracy," which discusses procedural, deliberative, and substantive democracy; "Sources of Democracy," on why democracy exists in some countries and not in others; "Democracy, Culture, and Society," about cultural and sociological preconditions for democracy; "Democracy and Constitutionalism," which focuses on the importance of independent courts and a bill of rights; "Presidentialism versus Parliamentarianism"; "Representation," discussing which is the fairest system of democratic accountability; "Interest Groups"; "Democracy's Effects," an examination of the effect of democracy on economic growth and social inequality; and finally, "Democracy and the Global Order" discusses the effects of democracy on international relations, including the propensity for war and the erosion of national sovereignty by transnational forces.

The on-the-ground original research provides a strong foundation for the directions the case law could take and small- and larger-scale institutional reforms that balance the goals of democracy, accountability, and efficiency.

Civil Society And Democracy In Nigeria written by Bernard Nwosu and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-07-27 with Political Science categories.
This book examines the complex relationship between the state and civil society and the impact that this has had on democratization processes in Nigeria from colonial times to the present. Expanding notions of democracy, the author builds a theoretical understanding of civil society to show how it can be both antithetical to and an ally of the state in the struggle for democratization. Combining the neo-Gramscian framework with discursive perspectives from Habermas and Foucault, the book takes a dialectical approach that traces the incarnations of the state and civil society and relates the mutual connections of the two spaces. This book will be of interest to scholars of African politics, democratization and civil society.

Master's Thesis from the year 2020 in the subject Politics - Topic: International relations, grade: 110/110 cum laude, University of Pavia, language: English, abstract: This thesis focuses on the role that external actors play in rebuilding one crucial issue that is at stake in these contexts, which is the legitimacy of post conflict political systems. The analysis will take into account the strategies and programs implemented by external forces specifically by intervening in three key areas: transitional governments, constitution-building processes and elections. The case study analyzed in this thesis is the Afghan one, particularly complex but fundamental to understand the strategies that these actors adopt in such contexts, and the results that can be achieved in countries that recover from conflict. After providing a theoretical framework concerning democratization and its features in war-torn countries, the analysis of the Afghan case will take into account the three areas mentioned above in order to evaluate the impact of external actors in rebuilding legitimacy in the country. Historically, democratization processes have always attracted the attention of scholars and practitioners. However, one case of particular relevance, especially starting from the end of the Cold War, has attracted increasing attention, that is the one of countries that went through violent conflict and start their transition to democracy and peace from a situation of violence and instability. In such scenarios, often external actors, notably the United Nations, intervene with the aim of supporting the transition towards democratic and peaceful assets. However, the outcomes of these interventions are often mixed.
