Degrowth is a planned economic contraction in wealthy countries that reduces production and consumption—and, by extension, greenhouse gas emissions and stresses on global ecosystems—to sustainable levels within ecological limits. This book explores the idea of degrowth as an economic alternative to offer a more sustainable and just future. A growing number of scientists and scholars now recognize that a system that continues to prioritize economic growth will prevent us from effectively addressing the dual environmental crises of climate change and biodiversity loss. This concept is proposed by ecological economists, who consider there to be a natural limitation on economic growth, imposed by necessary environmental regulation. Moreover they oppose the neoclassical ideas, which are considered as pro growth theories, arguing that economic growth itself does not contribute to the social and economic development, therefore it should not be sustained. Accepting this proposition the author makes an attempt to verify the feasibility of a de-growth strategy for macroeconomic stability, applying a post-Keynesian methodology for analysis. The Kaleckian model is used as the basic approach to derive the model restrictions for the de-growth strategy that maintains macroeconomic stability. The findings of this paper will provide policy recommendations to sustain macroeconomic stability, while taking full account of the degrowth assumptions.

This book explores the concept of degrowth, beginning from a basic assumption, not of resource depletion, as is common in most literature in the field, but rather from a state of abundance, arguing that there is a vast amount of energy on the planet waiting to be utilized by all its inhabitants. Adopting a sociological approach, Onofrio Romano argues that the growth momentum is not simply a broadly shared “value,” but the physiological outcome of a specific institutional frame. The problem is that in its mainstream formulation the degrowth alternative shares with the growth-led regime some basic anthropological, political, and institutional pillars. In order to build a real alternative, Romano suggests reviewing degrowth in the light of the dépense notion by Georges Bataille. According to Bataille, our societies have no problem with acknowledging scarcity, but with dealing with the surplus energy that calls us to act for a qualified life. So, in order to erase the growth obsession, we have to ward off the “servile” dimension, i.e., the utilitarian activities needed for the mere reproduction of life, to regain sovereignty, as reflected in the de-thinking subject.
