The essential guide for project managers and leaders.Project managers are often responsible for big teams and millions (sometimes billions) of dollars to deliver successful outcomes on time and within budget. But the reality is, most complex projects don't live up to their promise - they often fail, under-deliver or get delivered but burn out everyone in the process. Author and experienced project manager, Kieran Duck, argues that this is because the normal approach to project management doesn't work when projects are complex. The traditional emphasis on certainty and predictability comes from an industrial era where the focus was on controlling resources and effort. These days projects are unpredictable, they are emergent and performance relies on the opinions of key stakeholders and team members. The Complex Project Toolkit provides a way through this. Based on the concepts of design thinking, this comprehensive toolkit adds to existing project management approaches with new mindsets, practices and skills that will lift the performance of your most ambitious projects and improve the experience for everyone involved.

Performance Coaching For Complex Projects written by Tony Llewellyn and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-03-09 with Business & Economics categories.

Performance Coaching for Complex Projects recognises a world of complex undertakings for which the common transactional mindsets and methodologies will not produce the required results. The author advocates, instead, the novel concept that the project manager or team leader should coach the team as part of their role. Managing complexity requires greater use of influence and less reliance on coercion. Learning how to recognise the clues that reveal personal preferences, character traits and motivations will allow you to communicate in a way that recognises how different team members see the world. Team coaching helps the project team work together to think through their issues and then collectively implement the solution. Tony Llewellyn has structured his book in two parts. Part I looks at the challenges of complexity and makes the case for a shift from a transactional directive mindset to a transformational coaching philosophy. Part II introduces a model of project team coaching including the processes and methodologies that have been shown to be effective in improving team performance. Complex projects are invariably messy, not least because of the human factors associated with them. Performance Coaching for Complex Projects is essential reading for anyone responsible for managing in uncertain, challenging and changing environments.

'Over recent years Complexity Science has revealed to us new limits to our possible knowledge and control in social, cultural and economic systems. Instead of supposing that past statistics and patterns will give us predictable outcomes for possible actions, we now know the world is, and will always be, creative and surprising. Continuous structural evolution within such systems may change the mechanisms, descriptors, problems and opportunities, often negating policy aims. We therefore need to redevelop our thinking about interventions, policies and policy making, moving perhaps to a humbler, more 'learning' approach. In this Handbook, leading thinkers in multiple domains set out these new ideas and allow us to understand how these new ideas are changing policymaking and policies in this new era.' - Peter M Allen, Cranfield University, UK

The PhenX (consensus measures for Phenotypes and eXposures) Toolkit offers well-established, broadly validated measures of phenotypes and exposures relevant to investigators in human genomics, epidemiology, and biomedical research. This methods report describes the infrastructure and processes used to develop the content and features of the Toolkit. The PhenX consensus process is robust, yet flexible, as evidenced by its application to a range of research domains. During the initial phase of PhenX from March 2008 through April 2010, working groups of content experts addressed 21 research domains and selected 295 measures for the Toolkit. The PhenX Steering Committee prioritized and defined the scope of the domains and guided the consensus process with input from liaisons representing the National Institutes of Health. After the 21 domains were completed, another project to add breadth and depth to the Toolkit for substance abuse and addiction (SAA) research served to validate the consensus process. With the support of the SAA Scientific Panel to define the scope for one core and six specialty collections and SAA working groups to select measures, the PhenX project team added 44 measures to the Toolkit in 2012. The PhenX Toolkit, now being used by more than 1,000 researchers, offers a catalog of measures, supporting documentation, and tools for collaborative research. It used a consensus process that can serve as a template for investigators who are considering a similar approach.
