This Element surveys the place of the bookstore in the creative imagination (the fantasies of the bookstore) through a study of novels in which bookstores play a prominent role in the setting or plot. Nearly 500 'bookstore novels' published since the first in 1917 have been identified. The study borrows the concept of 'meaningful locations' from the field of human geography to assess fictional bookstores as narrative events rather than static backgrounds. As a meaningful location, the bookstore creates the potential for events that can occur both within the place of the store and in the wider space within which it functions. Elements of the narrative space include its spatio-temporal location, its locale or composition, and the events which these elements generate to define the bookstore's sense of place.

The unique lives of bookstores across America are captured in words and original oil paintings in this loving tribute to booksellers and bibliophiles. For decades, publisher Gibbs M. Smith visited bookstores across the United States. Inspired by the unique personality and ambiance of these community cultural hubs, he made oil paintings of these bookstores to feature on the covers of his publishing company's catalogue each season. The Art of the Bookstore collects sixty-eight of these paintings, pairing them with quotes, essays and remembrances about bookselling—a pursuit that is often more art than science—from Smith as well as other industry veterans. This volume captures the unique atmosphere of iconic bookshops including New York City's Strand Bookstore, Washington, D.C.'s Politics & Prose, and L.A.'s Book Soup.

FROM THE PUBLISHER OF DAYS AT THE MORISAKI BOOKSHOP 'Such a heart-warming, wonderful little read that'll appeal to anyone who understands what it means to fall in love with stories' - 5***** Reader Review There's a book written for every one of us... Carl may be 72 years old, but he's young at heart. Every night he goes door-to-door delivering books by hand to his loyal customers. He knows their every desire and preference, carefully selecting the perfect story for each person. One evening as he makes his rounds, nine-year-old Schascha appears. Loud and precocious, she insists on accompanying him - and even tries to teach him a thing or two about books. When Carl's job at the bookstore is threatened, will the old man and the girl in the yellow raincoat be able to restore Carl's way of life, and return the joy of reading to his little European town? THE DOOR-TO-DOOR BOOKSTORE is a heart-warming tale of the value of friendship, the magic of reading, and the power of books to unite us all. In this enthusiastic, heartfelt, and sometimes humorous ode to bookshops and booksellers, 84 known authors pay tribute to the brick-and-mortar stores they love and often call their second homes. In My Bookstore our greatest authors write about the pleasure, guidance, and support that their favorite bookstores and booksellers have given them over the years. The relationship between a writer and his or her local store and staff can last for years or even decades. Often it's the author's local store that supported him during the early days of his career, that continues to introduce and hand-sell her work to new readers, and that serves as the anchor for the community in which he lives and works. My Bookstore collects the essays, stories, odes and words of gratitude and praise for stores across the country in 81 pieces written by our most beloved authors. It's a joyful, industry-wide celebration of our bricks-and-mortar stores and a clarion call to readers everywhere at a time when the value and importance of these stores should be shouted from the rooftops. Perfectly charming line drawings by Leif Parsons illustrate each storefront and other distinguishing features of the shops.
