"[This book] focused on the rural or urban area Bidayuhs of both genders in maintaining or have shifted from their ancestral dialects. The younger generation of educated Bidayuh often uses Sarawak Malay, English, Bidayuh and Bahasa Melayu in a number of domains. Many of them are also becoming less proficient in Bidayuh compared to their parents or grand-parents. Code-switching is the most dominant pattern among the younger generation of educated Bidayuh during interactions. It is practical to accommodate because there is no common Bidayuh language, therefore, there are a lot of borrowings from Bahasa Melayu, Sarawak Malay and English for practical convenience. However, Bidayuh dialect is still a choice language preferred by the young educated Bidayuh undergraduate to express their Bidayuh identity."--adapted from Back cover.
