In this collection of essays written by the former head of the Library of Congress Chinese Collection, Chi Wang chronicles the modest beginnings of the Chinese Collection at the Library of Congress and his crusade to transform it into the largest collection and Chinese cultural presence outside Asia. For anyone who has ever wondered what goes on inside the marble walls of one of the country’s oldest federal institutions, Wang relates an insider’s account of the major milestones and changes to the administration of the Collection over the years. Readers will be surprised not only to learn about some of the rare and priceless books that have found their way to the Library of Congress but also by the candor with which Wang shares his story about serving under three different Librarians of Congress, each with a different mandate and mark they wanted to leave behind. Building a Better Chinese Collection for the Library of Congress has value as American library history but also serves as a useful introduction to Chinese historical archives and libraries. Select writings discuss publication and personnel exchanges with Chinese academic libraries, Chinese character encoding and library automation, and publishing activities in China.

Inside the World's Major East Asian Collections examines the rise of the "LAM, an acronym that stands for libraries, archives and museums. In doing so, this book profiles leading experts—librarians, archivists and museum curators—who specialise in East Asian collections from across the world. In examining the dynamically shifting role of the cultural institution in the context of managing information and collections, this book provides important themes offered by these cultural experts in understanding the necessary professional skills, knowledge and personalities that are required for working in such environments of varying size, scope and composition in LAMs. As galleries, LAMs manage preservation and access of history and culture, and their missions and goals as cultural institutions continue to converge. As collecting institutions, LAMs share the common mandate to preserve and make accessible primary resources valuable for researchers and professionals, as well as the public. LAMs are mostly publicly funded, publicly accountable institutions collecting cultural heritage materials. Another aim of this book is to enhance the visibility and recognise the efforts of the LAM professionals as cultural institution leaders, since much of their great contributions in the respective fields to preserving our cultural and documentary heritages have gone unnoticed outside their parent institutions. - Examines the roles and goals of cultural institutions - Brings collections to life through interviews with LAM experts - Presents LAMs with a focus on East Asia - Serves as a platform for LAM professionals to share and exchange experiences and insights

The Development Of The Chinese Collection In The Library Of Congress written by Shu Chao Hu and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-07-11 with Social Science categories.

This is the first comprehensive and in-depth study of the Chinese collection in the Library of Congress, the largest collection of its kind in the Western world. Started in 1869 with some 950 books received in the first exhange of publications between the United States and China, the collection has grown so steadily that in 1977 it numbered more than 430,000 volumes, including 2,000 rare Chinese items, some of which were printed in A.D. 975. In this primarily historical study, Professor Hu examines the social, cultural, and political forces that led to the development and growth of the collection, the acquisitions policies followed, and the sources of personal and financial support found within and outside the Library of Congress. He also explores the methods by which the library has built up several strong areas in the collection, particularly those of Chinese gazetteers, or local histories; ts’ung-shu, or collections of reprints; and rare works.

Hunters Collectors written by Asian Civilisations Museum (Singapore) and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with Antiques & Collectibles categories.

This book looks at a group of early collectors who worked in Southeast Asia during the late 19th and the first half of the 20th Century. Their travels in the region resulted in the formation of what was to become the Ethnology collection at the Raffles Library and Museum in Singapore. The collectors included naturalists, explorers, a businessman and a missionary who worked largely outside the bounds of the institution. This book explores what these early collectors acquired, whether they were simply treasure hunting or collecting with more scholarly purpose, and their approach to and motivation for acquiring cultural artefacts during this period. These questions continue to interest scholars, curators and collectors today, as part of the broader topics of 'colonial collecting' that has developed particularly in the field of anthropology over the past two and a half decades.
