Sir Nigel Thompson walked to school around the bomb craters of the London Blitz--it made him want to build things, rather than knock them down. After studying structural engineering in Africa, he worked on hospitals and theaters in London, and later headed the team that designed University of Qatar. He went on to design Embankment Place, a massive office complex built over London's Charing Cross railway station. Turning from building to rebuilding, he explored construction opportunities for British firms during the Gulf War, in Kuwait's still-burning oil fields. Following the 1999 bombing of Serbia and Kosovo, he led a reconstruction task force in Kosovo at the request of UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, for which he was knighted. Thompson's memoir details his long career in architectural design and construction, and in restorative development.

This book enquires into the pattern of these relationships since the Renaissance, looking at what has actually taken place when architecture and engineering have interlocked. It looks at projects such as building of the Eiffel Tower, Pompidou Centre, Chicago skyscraper and at personalities such as Vauban, Perronet, Frank Lloyd Wrigbt, Le Corbusier and Ove Arup.

Excerpt from Specifications for Practical Architecture: A Guide to the Architect, Engineer, Surveyor, and Builder; With an Essay on the Structure and Science of Modern Buildings A volume of Specifications of a practical character being greatly required, and the old standard work of Alfred Bartholomew being out of print, I have taken his work as my basis, and have struck out and altered the preliminary matter, so as to make it more adapted to modern science and requirements. The Specifications I have so altered as to bring in the now universal use of concrete, the more general use of drainage, the use of iron, glass, asphalte, and other material. Where it has seemed to me to be necessary, I have inserted Specifications of works that have been erected in my own practice, and I have added a form for General Conditions and an Agreement. I am confident that the work will be useful in the office of Architects, and all those who have the pleasure or necessity to build. An Engineer Imagines written by Peter Rice and has been published by Batsford Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-03-14 with Architecture categories.

The long-awaited reissue of the autobiography of Peter Rice, one of the main structural engineers behind the Sydney Opera House, the Pompidou Centre, the Menil Collection and Lloyd's of London. 'I am an engineer. Often people will call me an 'architect engineer' as a compliment. It is meant to signify a quality of engineer who is more imaginative and design-orientated than a normal engineer... To call an engineer an 'architect engineer' because he comes up with unusual or original solutions is essentially to misunderstand the role of the engineer in society.' An Engineer Imagines is a rare look into the professional creativity and philosophy of Peter Rice, who was widely acclaimed as the greatest structural engineer of his generation. He was a man who, in Renzo Piano's words, could design structures 'like a pianist who can play with his eyes shut'. Working with many of the world's greatest architects on buildings that became icons of contemporary architecture, he brought a uniquely poetic feeling to his work. Joining Ove Arup & Partners in 1956, Rice had heard that 'it was a place where an oddball could fit in.' Taking on Arup's theory of Total Design to heart, Rice writes about the role of the engineer in society, and how he himself applied his creativity to various projects. He admits he became an engineer by accident, tentatively feeling his way through a career without a natural instinct. But as he takes you through each of his projects, one-by-one, you can trace his development from graduate to veteran. Written in clear and poetic language, Rice's autobiography is perfect for those who want to better understand postwar buildings, our concrete environment, or are budding students of engineering and architecture.
