A journey through the diverse landscape of American Buddhism, written with a "blessedly down-to-earth sense of humor" (Rodger Kamenetz, author of The Jew in the Lotus). In an era when many of us yearn for an escape from a culture of noise and narcissism, this book takes us into the physical and spiritual geography of Buddhism, American-style: from a weekend at a mountain retreat for corporate executives learning effective ways to cope with stress, to a visit with a Zen teacher holding classes in an old Quaker farmhouse, to a meeting with a Catholic priest who's also a Zen master. Both a lively introduction to this Eastern spiritual tradition and a colorful portrait of American society, The Accidental Buddhist "makes the oftentimes impenetrable concepts of Buddhism accessible to the reader and contains striking, and important, parallels and contrasts between [the author's] own Catholic upbringing and ancient Buddhist traditions" ( Library Journal). "A travelogue detailing the tremendous diversity within American Buddhism. His anecdotes make it clear that the umbrella term 'Buddhist' encompasses strict Zen monks, laid-back Tibetan politicos, and beatnik holdover Allen Ginsberg. In his travels, Moore attends weekend retreats, chronicles the Dalai Lama's 1996 visit to Indiana, and grooves to Change Your Mind Day, a meditative Buddha-fest in New York City's Central Park. . . . He finds that his family is his sangha (monastery), and while he still feels he is 'probably a fairly lousy Buddhist,' he will eclectically combine his various forms of new knowledge to find a path that makes sense to him. Now that may be an authentic American Buddhism." — Kirkus Reviews

The Buddhist Experience in America examines how these traditions are practiced. The book also includes a discussion of the historical Buddha and an examination of how contemporary Buddhism has responded to current issues and concerns. Appendices include a glossary, a "who's who" of Buddhism, a timeline, and a list of resources for further information."--Jacket.

Emily Dickinson Accidental Buddhist written by Rupert C. Allen and has been published by Trafford Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with Literary Criticism categories.

Emily Dickinson, at an early age, became enlightened. Ego-transcendence awakened her to the Higher Self, unleashing a torrent of creative energy that sustained her for 35 years, producing hundreds of poems dealing with the phenomena of cosmic awareness. This also made her a heretic, for she (like the Buddhists) recognizes no creator god, much less a deathless ego-self in the form of a soul; hence the secrecy of her poetic enterprise. Over the years she made booklets of her poems and stashed them away, to be discovered posthumously. Dickinson's worldview was first described by the Buddha, and has been examined at length in countless Buddhist commentaries, which makes the dharma accessible to rational understanding. This provides the cognitive framework of Emily Dickinson: Accidental Buddhist. It consists of lucid close readings demystifying man of Dickinson's most "enigmatic" poems. The author, RC Allen, is a retired humanities professor, and a veteran student of the Spanish transcendentalist poets. His experience and familiarity with archetypal discourse are now devoted to the Dickinson oeuvre. His previous book, Solitary Prowess: The Transcendentalist Poetry of Emily Dickinson (Saru Press International), appeared in 2005.
