Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 2,3, University of Kassel, course: Introduction to English as a Foreign Language (EFL) Teaching Methodology, language: English, abstract: Since we are studying to become future teachers of English, it is really important to teach the “so-called ́four skills`- listening, speaking, reading and writing” (Brumfit, 1984, p.103). This term paper will only deal with two of the four skills, which are listening and speaking. Both of these skills need to be learned and require active behaviour. This term paper starts off by introducing the reader to the topic of teaching listening, continues by explaining the characteristics of listening situations, learner problems with listening and different listening activities which can be used at school. Furthermore, it gives a definition of speaking, how to teach speaking at school, some important speaking methods and learner problems. The next topic is the oral presentation itself and what we did in class, which tasks we gave to the other students, which aims we wanted to achieve and how everything worked out. In the final conclusion we want to show what we learned while we prepared our presentation and actually presented it in class. Some problems that occurred in class and how we could have improved the organisation of the presentation and the get involved part will be mentioned as well. We finish our paper with the attachment and the bibliography.

This guide is a collection of practical ideas for teaching listening skills to learners of a second language. Most are contributed by teachers of English as a Second Language, but the activities may be appropriate for other languages. Each idea is described briefly, with information given about appropriate proficiency level(s), specific aims, class time requirements, preparation time, needed resources, procedures, and caveats and options. The first section focuses on development of cognitive strategies: listening to the main idea; listening for details; and predicting. Section 2 contains activities that demonstrated the interlinked nature of listening with speaking, pronunciation, and vocabulary. The third section provides ideas for teaching aspects of stress, intonation, and register, particularly as they relate to pronunciation. A subsequent section deals with the use of technology in the listening classroom, and the next with listening for academic purposes, especially at the higher education level, where instruction is often provided in a second language. The final section draws together disparate tasks that deal with affective aspects of the listening process, using songs and relaxation techniques. An addendum includes tasks for dealing with problems in the listening classroom. (MSE)

Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,3, University of Cologne, language: English, abstract: Nowadays foreign language teaching has become established in the majority of primary schools. The introduction of foreign language teaching in primary schools leads to an improvement of linguistic and communicative competency. Due to the fact that pupils begin to learn English in grade one they automatically extend their learning time and they also start to learn the language in the most opportune moment in their life. Even shy pupils realize that they already know some English words, which they got to know from different kinds of advertising in radio, television or the internet. Another point is that it is possible to communicate in English without knowing much words or structures. As a result, the pupils’ motivation to learn the language retains. As a teacher it is important to know which expectations you can have on your pupils and which accomplishments this young learners are able to achieve. Teachers should also be aware of the fact that children will always acquire new language input in a defined order. First they hear new input through listening. Then they attempt to repeat the new input through speaking. Through reading the children will see the written form of the new input and in the last step the children would write the new word themselves (cf. Clausen, 2009, p.8). So listening is a basic skill which is a foundation for any other skill like speaking, reading and writing. According to that this term paper focuses on how to teach listening. Its main purpose is to provide information about theoretical and practical approaches, especially with emphasis on the listening skill in primary school. Moreover it gives an insight into appropriate behaviour of teachers and of different methods a teacher can use to improve children’s listening skills.
