Devising Theatre is a practical handbook that combines a critical analysis of contemporary devised theatre practice with descriptions of selected companies, and suggestions for any group devising theatre from scratch. It is the first book to propose a general theory of devised theatre. After identifying the unique nature of this type of performance, the author examines how devised theatre is perceived by professional practitioners, and provides an historical overview illustrating how it has evolved since the 1960s. Alison Oddey examines the particular working practices and products of a number of professional companies, including a Reminiscence theatre for the elderly and a theatre-in-education group, and offers ideas and exercises for exploration and experimentation.

This monograph argues that implementing devised theatre as a learning praxis has a unique potential to cultivate student agency in the twenty-first century classroom. It offers actionable guidance for drama instructors by providing a new arts education methodology that emphasizes the role of student-led dramaturgy. Based on quantitative and qualitative analyses of survey results, group interviews, and field observations from the facilitation of two original pieces of digital devised theatre created by Pacific Islander and Asian-American public high school students on Oʻahu, the author documents the crucial roles of constructive and resisting student agency in a devised theatre classroom. This book then departs from established research in suggesting that passivity serves a crucial role in allowing students to assert agency nonconfrontationally, which has considerable implications for peripatetic learners. It also investigates the role of student agency in online theatre education, which, along with expected challenges, was found to produce unique benefits, such as real-time documented performance feedback and accessible asynchronous teacher guidance. Further, a new form of student agency is identified, one exclusive to online learning environments, where students assert themselves by discussing technological challenges such as slow Wi-Fi, camera malfunctions, or other pragmatic concerns. Finally, this book makes a case that the success of these projects with Pacific Islander and Asian-American students suggests that although devising comes from a White Eurocentric tradition, it can provide an effective learning strategy for students from a wide variety of backgrounds. As global discourse continues to push toward reform that would allow populations around the world increased agency over their lives, this volume makes a unique contribution to the critical conversation around student agency in education today and will appeal to scholars and researchers across arts education, and theatre and performance studies.

Education scholars Mark E. Engberg and Sylvia Hurtado state in their article "Developing Pluralistic Skills and Dispositions in College: Examining Racial/Ethnic Group Differences" that as the United States is becoming more diverse, the world is moving to a global economy and this trend creates a workplace demand for workers with pluralistic skills which in turn mandates that higher education address this need. Providing numerous opportunities for cultural exchange in several different contexts is significant in creating individuals who support a pluralistic society as well as thrive in one. Devising theatre is one such opportunity that allows students to explore their identity and the issues that arise from discussing global culture. Devising also gives students an opportunity to discover and experience some of these differences in our global society. In our information rich, digital age it is imperative that we discover how to teach live performance to students saturated by visual, auditory, and moving media. My dissertation explores how to create a pedagogy using devised theatre that not only recognizes the influence of the digital world on our students, but incorporates an interdisciplinary and multicultural approach that includes the use of technology to teach creativity and performance. This pedagogy will address how devised theatre provides a multicultural basis for ensuring inclusivity and how our digital experience can help break the barriers of isolation. Included in this dissertation is a brief history of devising that includes the influence of modern dance and musical theatre, something that devising history scholars have not yet given serious consideration. I investigate the impact that the now common televisual cyber culture has on our students and describe the use of technology in current performance practices. I conclude with describing how to create devising coursework that prepares individuals who can successfully maneuver in a global society with an aptitude for innovation and a continually developing social conscience.

Shortlisted for Outstanding Drama Education Resource at the 2025 Music & Drama Education Awards A unique resource for drama teachers providing 200 stimuli and age-appropriate individual topics within those to help inspire and guide young people in devising performance. It contains useful information on devising techniques, workshops, schemes and lesson ideas for introducing devising and guidance on how to analyse the work and give feedback. Following on from his successful book 200 Plays for GCSE and A-Level Performance, author Jason Hanlan has once again solved one of drama teachers' most frequently encountered problems: how to unlock the best devised performance with their students. Devising as a group requires a level of collaboration, which - without a strong framework - often descends into wild flights of fancy and a myriad of dead ends. Excellent ideas can be lost or diluted in an often-awkward attempt to tie it all together to fit a narrative. The main body of this book is a unique numbered listing of 200 stimuli, designed to both inspire and focus the mind, with an example of a possible topic and 'ways in' that would be suitable for each level: "Civil rights" Each stimuli is given its own page dedicated to exploring its possibilities as a piece of devised theatre for different age groups, and offering suggestions for plays, films and books to look at; artefacts and images to examine; ideas to consider; and further research you can draw on.

Winner of the 2021 Music & Drama Education Award for Outstanding Drama Education Resource Much of the theatre we make starts with a script and a story given to us by someone else. But what happens when we're required to start from scratch? How do we begin to make theatre using our own ideas, our own perspective, our own stories? A Beginner's Guide to Devising Theatre, written by the artistic directors of the award-winning young people's performance company Junction 25 and is aimed at those new to devising or wanting to further develop their skills. It explores creative ways to create original theatre from a contemporary stimulus. It offers a structure within which to approach the creative process, including ideas on finding a starting point, generating material, composition and design; it offers practical ideas for use in rehearsal; and it presents grounding in terminology that will support a confident and informed approach to production. The book features contributions from some of the young performers who have been a part of Junction 25's work to date, as well as key artists and companies that work professionally in devised theatre, including case studies from Quarantine, the Team, Mammalian Diving Reflex, Nic Green and Ontroerend Goed. The work of Junction 25 is used to illustrate the concepts and ideas set out in the book. Ideal for any student faced with the challenge of creating work from scratch, A Beginner's Guide to Devising Theatre offers constructive guidance, which supports the requirements of students taking Drama and Theatre Studies courses. The book includes a foreword by theatre critic Lyn Gardner.
