In the raging controversy over the purpose of public education and how to fix the nation's underperforming schools, the voices of America's best teachers are seldom heard. Now for the first time, in a provocative book about the future of teaching and learning, 12 of America's most accomplished classroom educators join a leading advocate for a 21st-century teaching profession to bring expert pedagogical know-how and fresh and provocative policy ideas to the national school reform debate. Together they identify four emergent realities that will shape the learning experience of children born in the New Millennium, and propose six levers of change that can ignite a bright future for students by ensuring they all have access to excellent teaching.

The continuous social change and its dynamics also require a corresponding adaptability of the education system. Pluralization, individualization and digitization in our living environments, increased demands and expectations of education, tendencies towards economization (such as the "measurement and comparison" of education) as well as an increasing ecological awareness lead to changed framework conditions within a field of tension of the most diverse interests that the education system has to face. These and other aspects are examined and discussed in this monography by authors from 9 European countries, from different angles and with different perspectives.

This monograph appears midway through the development of a book on the future of teaching, scheduled for publication in the fall of 2010. The book is a team effort, undertaken by 12 accomplished educators from across the United States, who have agreed to systematically study and speculate about public education and the teaching profession in the year 2030. As they go about this work, these teacher leaders are drawing upon their own experiences, current policy research and debate, and the insights of other future-thinkers who, like themselves, look at the educational, social and political trends of today and begin to imagine best-case scenarios about learning and teaching tomorrow. This paper presents a progress report on the TeacherSolutions 2030 (TS2030) project, written from the perspective of the author, who is President and CEO of the Center for Teaching Quality and a writing partner with the TS2030 team. In this monograph, the author speaks in his own voice about the future of the teaching profession, but he draws deeply on the understandings and insights emerging from his teacher colleagues as they continue work on next year's book from Teachers College Press. (Contains 59 endnotes and 4 figures.).

Teachers are central to unlocking every learner's potential and achieving Sustainable Development Goal 4 of inclusive, equitable and quality education for all. Regrettably, worldwide teacher shortages have been endangering the future of education. New data collected for the Global Report on Teachers indicates that 44 million additional teachers are needed to achieve universal primary and secondary education by 2030. Shortages are widespread, with sub-Saharan Africa needing 15 million more teachers, while higher-income countries face retention challenges, resulting in teachers massively leaving the profession. Echoing calls from the International Commission on the Futures of Education and the 2022 Transforming Education Summit, this report advocates for dignifying, diversifying, and valorizing the teaching profession. It emphasizes the importance of improved working conditions, enhanced professional development, and increased teacher involvement in decision-making to bridge the gap. This report is a tool to mobilize international and country efforts to empower, recruit, train, and support teachers within resilient education systems for a collaborative, innovative, and cohesive teaching profession. It is a roadmap, aiming to elevate the status of the teaching profession and ensure quality education for all learners, urging immediate action.
