Description: 'Religion is a doing and doing what is moral'. In Buddhism, particularly, there is such a great emphasis on moral doing that is very often designated as an 'ethical religion' (silaparaka dharma). The present work seeks to study Buddhist ethics as a development process not only in terms of inner dynamics of Buddhism inherent in its doctrinal and ethical formulations but also in terms of its response to various historical compulsions which motivated its followers to introduce in its general framework novelties of forms and expressions. It is hoped that such an approach would lead to a greater appreciation of Buddhist ethics both as an emergent of a unique spiritual vision and a social force. The book which is divided in six chapters cover the entire range of Buddhist development in India. The work is novel both in its approach and treatment of the subject. It studies conceptual formulations in their proper historical contexts. Modern debates on various ethical problems have been taken into account to bring about greater clarity in discussions.

The outgrowth of an historic international conference on Buddhist ethics in the modern world, this volume offers a comprehensive overview of the status of the Buddhist tradition in a contemporary and global context. Buddhist experts from several Asian and Western nations address a number of ethical problems from the Buddhist perspective, including medical and environmental ethics, feminism, the social impacts of materialism, and ethnic minorities. All major schools of Buddhism are represented--Mahayana, Theravada, and Vajrayana--as well as a variety of sects such as Ch'an/Zen, Lojong, and Pure Land. The diverse cultural settings of Buddhism are also well illustrated, ranging from China to Japan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and the United States. Throughout, the Buddhist values of compassion and tolerance inform the discussions. The papers are organized within a temporal framework in order to demonstrate the ongoing evolution of Buddhist thought. Part One explores the historical roots of Buddhism and examines the concepts and practices that continue to exert a pervasive influence on Buddhist ethical principles. The second group of essays confronts the pressing concerns of our times--ecology, nuclear war, capitalism, and more--re-evaluating them from a distinctly Buddhist perspective. The third and final section is concerned with projections of Buddhism's future and its continuing evolution. The contributors suggest ways in which Buddhist thought may be adapted to meet the needs of a multi-cultural world and may even act as a unifying force among diverse cultures. A glossary of Buddhist terms is included to enhance the understanding of readers at all levels. Essential reading for courses of Buddhist thought, this volume vividly demonstrates how the insights of Buddhism can help us effectively address the critical challenges of contemporary life.

"Jamgon Kongtrul's monumental Encyclopedia of Buddhism (Treasury of Knowledge) contains a complete account of the major lines of thought and practice that comprise Tibetan Buddhism. Buddhist Ethics is the fifth part of that work and considered by many scholars to be its heart." "This text presents the three major systems of ethics found in the Tibetan tradition. Widely known simply as the "three vows," these are the vows of personal liberation (pratimoksa), universal liberation (bodhisattva), and secret mantra (tantra). Jamgon Kongtrul explains the need for and nature of an authentic teacher-student relationship as the support for one's training in each system. He then provides the complete code of personal liberation as it applies to both monastic and lay persons, the precepts for those aspiring to the life of a bodhisattva, and the exceptional pledges for practitioners on the tantric path of pure perception."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Principles Of Buddhist Tantra written by Mathew Varghese and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Philosophy categories.
Description: This work is a textual based discourse on the Cittavisuddhi-prakarana of Aryadeva, a seminal text which describes the principle and philosophy of Buddhist Tantra. The dispute on the question of Tantric meditative practices having any philosophical foundation or whether those practices have been introduced into the ethico-religious praxis of various religious traditions as a later introduction is a continuing discussion. In this work, it is trying to prove that the introduction of Tantra into Madhyamika philosophy is a natural development and it is proved beyond doubt by reviewing an important work in the Buddhist tradition written by Aryadeva, the Cittavisuddhi-prakarana. The unique dialectical method introduced and used by the Madhyamikas to interpret their philosophy and the conception offunyatd is the guiding principle in this regard. Madhyamika envisages that the conception of sunyata can be interpreted as the proper understanding of the insubstantial nature of object of the world (dharma-nairatmya) and the insubstantial nature of the subjective self which perceives such objects of the world (pudgala-nairdtmya). The dialectics advanced by the Madhyamika is efficient in deconstructing the substantiality of the phenomenal world of objects, but that is effectively possible only after reconstructing the notion of a substantive self using Tantric spiritual practices. The sunyata as the conception of dharma-nairatmya is achieved through reconstructing the substantive notion of the phenomenal world using dialectics, while it as the conception of pudgala-nairatmya is achieved using Tantric spiritual practices.

It represents an effort to reverse a dangerous, and possible destructive tide in human existence. Dr. Segesvary's work links the phenomenon of globalization to the increasing importance of inter-civilizational relations - these latter representing the powerful counter-current to the globalizing trend.
