The brilliant and immensely prolific Indian writer Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) is known the world over for his accomplished works in an astoundingly wide range of genres: fiction, short stories, poetry, drama, and essays. During the final year of his life, while suffering from the painful illness that would eventually end in his death, Tagore completed four volumes of poetry that expressed the emotional turmoil of facing one's own imminent extinction. Appearing here for the first time in English is a selection of these extraordinary poems that captures as closely as possible the beauty and subtlety of Tagore's original Bengali verses. A marked departure from Tagore's earlier work, these poems are, as the translators say, "so compact that it is almost as if [he]...were going beyond words, as if language no longer suffices, and yet, of course, the language radiates meaning." Poised between life and death, Tagore is awed by the beauty of this world and glimpses in it the presence of the infinite ("Such splendor illuminates a deathlessness/ hidden in the everyday by our senses' limits"). At other times, "alone by sorrow's last window," he is gripped by the sheer terror of experiencing the relentless approach of death. Tagore was so weak at the end that he had to dictate his poems. Although the pain was often excruciating and the fear and anger overwhelming, he still exulted in life. In these poems, from his deathbed, he conveys the intense joy of living and his ultimate triumph over death.

Seventy Two specially selected poems on the subject of "Death" and 'after Life' issues, have been publised deviding them in 12 Chapters, which deals with from the pains-losses-sufferings and pathetic memories of the diseased person, near and dear, lover and beloved, and gradually taking readers to higher platform of thoughts and realization of Creative process, the Creator's designs, transformation of forms and energy, keeping total aggregate same and unchanged, nothing is lost in the Universe of the Supreme creator and sustainer of this created systems and entities, believes in liberation [a Buddhist and also a Hindu thought], belief in Re-birth [mainly a Hindu belief, concept of final solace in faithful surrender of all matters to His pleasure, and at His feet, some theosophical belief of non-perishability of Soul [Aatma], argued by the Upanisads to Geeta, Tagore's own experience of seeing himself outside his own physical existence {Poem No.58}, one resurrection experience as narrated by him in Poem No. 57, and at the last phase of his life, he totally denied death as the ends of the Entities [vide poems no. 54 to 62] a final conviction that the Creator, processed out after 1750 Crores of years after the Big Bang, giving Humans, the only creature to enter into perusal and de-codification of His Universe, it's creative process, tried to understand their Creator. He believed that it shall be, and in fact even in current days] it is His great pleasure that some of His off-springs have understood Him, a father or a mother [who brought any child on Earth] want the first great pleasure when they see that their off-springs first distinctly identify their parents and call them "father" or " mother" as the case may be. Such is the relation of mankind with the Universal Creative Process or the Supreme One, whom we identify a Creator, in various manner and may be in a very wrong manners [ as ordinary persons have no greater brain power to conceive any thing beyond an Anthropometric God. Tagore's God is always approaching to make Him fully revealed and mingle with His creation [the mankind] for His own pleasure, out of His own love for them. And similarly, the mankind is the only product of God, who had been trying utmost to discover who is that ONE, so mankind is also in a march to meet and mingle with their Creator. This mutual love-relation is reflected in Tagore's poems vide ]specially Poem No. 51 to 56 [ Chapter-11: Re-Union]...The Great Qualities of expressing his thoughts will definitely be enchanting and appealing to swollen-up souls, who are going to meet death of himself or of his near and dear one, inevitable. Death being a must event of our birth, and how a great visionary like Tagore, who wrote 217 books, of original thoughts, 52 books of Poems only, during his writing period from age 16 to the last day in 1941, [His last poem of life is given in Serial No. 9 of this collection. Please do not forget to pay final Salutation to the God, the Creator [See as Tagore did in his Poem at Serial No. 54 and also a Last Salutation to this Mother Earth on whose lap with got birth, played our life-game, and this mother supplied every thing we need to enjoy and sustain our life here; and see how Tagore paid this last Salutation to mother Earth vide very long Poem at Serial No. 3. The English Verse version is first tried by this translator, as Tagore [36 songs ?] and others less than 50 songs, all did in prose, to convey the summary-meaning of the poems; but this is the first effort to make exact presentation of his expression, by Word-to-Word & Line-to-Line translation in poetic verse form . Hope this carefully selected poems on Deaths and beyond, titled "The Death and The Deathless' be 'THE SOLACE OF OUR LIFE AND THE SOLACE OF OUR DEATHS'.
