The increasing interest in private lives and the falling off of coverage of serious news is often described as 'tabloidization.' The essays in this book are the first serious scholarly studies of what is going on and what its implications are. Reality, it turns out, is much more complex than some of the laments suggest. As the contributors show, this is not just a U.S. problem but is repeated in country after country, and it is not certain that the media anywhere are getting more tabloid. What is more, there is no consensus about whether tabloidization is just 'dumbing down' or whether it is a necessary tactic for the mass media to engage with new audiences who do not have the news habit.

Coverage of the Clinton-Lewinsky saga followed in a long trail of media exposures of the more personal details of the lives of public figures. Many commentators have seen stories like this, and TV shows like Jerry Springer's, as evidence of a decline in the standards of the mass media. This increasing interest in private lives and the falling off of coverage of serious news is often described as “tabloidization.” The essays in this book are the first serious scholarly studies of what is going on and what its implications are. The primary goal of the volume on "Visual Communication" is to provide a collection of high quality, accessible papers that offer an overview of the different academic approaches to Visual Communication, the different theoretical perspectives on which they are based, the methods of analysis used and the different media and genre that have come under analysis. There is no such existing volume that draws together this range of closely related material generally found in much less related areas of research, including semiotics, art history, design, and new media theory. The volume has a total of 34 individual chapters that are organized into two sections: theories and methods, and areas of visual analysis. The chapters are all written by quality theorists and researchers, with a view that the research should be accessible to non-specialists in their own field while at the same time maintaining a high quality of work. The volume contains an introduction, which plots and locates the different approaches contained in it within broader developments and history of approaches to visual communication across different disciplines as each has attempted to define its terrain sometimes through unique concepts and methods sometimes through those borrowed and modified from others.

Do you like reading those hilarious tabloid "news" stories about Aliens, Bigfoot, dumb crooks, super-powered household pets, and "incredible but true" current event stories from tabloids? Do you also hate all the raunchy pictures, perverted stories, Hollywood gossip, and ads for implants, piercing and psychics? Me too. Instead of paying $3 to wade through all that garbage (that your kids will read also) to get 2 or 3 amusing stories an issue, why not get 40 funny, bite-size tales that can be consumed in a few minutes each? These are laughs you can share with family, friends, and co-workers. Pastor Pete, Sister Sally, and even your in-laws won't be embarrassed. The 4 short stories require 10-30 minutes per read. "A Real Life Superhero" is the inspirational account of a kind-hearted loser who always dreamed of being a superhero. Would people ever appreciate his life of good deeds? "Not Just a Cat" may be just a tad out there. The protagonist suffers a debilitating on-the-job back injury, which results in lying around the house, and taking pain pills complements of Workman's Compensation. After a few months, he thinks his cat is talking to him. All's well that ends well in this tale of temporary delusional hijacks. "Missy's Bear" is a refreshing (compared to my other stories) bedtime story I made up for my own daughters when they were young. A precocious little girl befriends a talking bear. There you have it folks. 44 original stories to keep you chuckling through the day.
