How does climate change affect social work and social development? What actions are needed to integrate the three pillars of economic development, environmental development and social protection? With global warming and the increase in natural disasters due to the emission of greenhouse gases, an alternative approach to the natural environment is vital. The main focus of this volume is to emphasize the person-in-environment concept and to find measures for its implementation. For social work the environment has traditionally been viewed as a world of human relationships as opposed to the interaction between man and environment. This informative and incisively written edited collection brings together experts from around the world to analyze the person-in-environment concept and to find measures for its implementation. Through the presentation of theoretical and practical platforms for environmental social work or ‘green social work’, we hope to bring about a new paradigmatic shift in our attitude to the concept of person-in- environment.

*Clearly defines the "social" aspect of sustainable development *Suggests steps for international development agencies to mainstream policy Have you ever wondered why the term sustainable development is usually associated with the economic, environmental, and social components, but the social components are the least well defined? Neil Thin explores the diverse meanings of these social components of sustainable development. He offers steps we can take to mainstream social development policy, so we can better plan social progress, communicate about objectives and strategies, and assess social change. He argues that social accountability must be an integrated set of concerns, not a marginalized responsibility of specialists. It must transcend time and spaces, taking into account not only those who are close to us, but distant strangers and future generations as well.

The Routledge International Handbook of Social Development, Social Work, and the Sustainable Development Goals answers the question: What is the contribution of social development and social work to the Sustainable Development Goals? The success of these goals requires implementation, and each of the 17 objectives for sustainable social progress have a social dimension. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), like the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) before them, were born of a larger social development movement which over the last 25 years has become increasingly mainstream in the fields of international development, sustainability, and social work. These practitioners are essential to the implementation of the SDGs. This handbook examines how the SDGs are being implemented in diverse contexts. No previous work has surveyed social development and social work’s contribution to the SDGs nor represented voices from the Global South on the SDGs. This book broadens the current literature by focusing on key sites throughout the Global South and featuring underrepresented voices from Africa, Asia, and Latin America. These regions are vitally important to assessing the SDGs, as this is where innovative social development projects are occurring, and where social workers are playing a leading role in achieving the SDGs. The book is divided into eight parts: • Context of Social Development, Social Work, and the SDGs • Perspectives on the SDGs • Case Studies on Engagement with the SDG Agenda • Case Studies on Ending Poverty • Case Studies on Health and Well-Being • Case Studies on Gender Equality • Case Studies on Climate and Sustainability • Case Studies on Governance, Peace, and Justice It comprises 35 newly written chapters by 74 authors. It will be of interest to a broad interdisciplinary audience of scholars, educators, and students in the fields of social development, social welfare, social work, social policy, human rights, international relations, political science, international affairs, sustainability, community development, area studies, and development studies.

Social Development And The Sustainable Development Goals In South Asia written by Nitya Mohan Khemka and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-09-02 with Social Science categories.

This book assesses the roadmap for the implementation of the SDGs in South Asia, focusing in particular on the areas of poverty reduction, inequality, health/well-being and water and sanitation. South Asia is amongst the fastest growing regions in the world, with an aggregate GDP in excess of two trillion US dollars, but at the same time it has significant deficits in human development, with 37 per cent of the world's poor and nearly half of the world's malnourished children. For South Asia, the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) represent a constructive opportunity to end many of the region's deprivations in a time-bound and systematic manner. Starting with the legacy of the Millennium Development Goals, the book goes on to provide a country-by-country overview of strategies for addressing the problems of poverty, health, water and sanitation. South-South Cooperation and in particular the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) are discussed and, finally, the editors present a summary of policy priorities for social development. This book aims to be a useful resource for researchers, policy influencers, planners, implementers, students, and activists aiming to push to achieve the SDGs.

"This study attempts to redefine the notion of the common good, by providing a meaningful and operational definition to the concept of sustainable development. In so doing, it seeks to contribute towards a conceptional rationale for planning as an intervention in societal affairs. The study demonstrate that sustainable development not only provides a legitimate interpretation of the common good in a global context, but moreover, represents an evolving paradigm or world view, that has arisen in response to the stresses generated by the incompatibility of the prevailing paradigm, with respect to its bio-physical and socio-economic environment. The introduction into New Zealand legislation of the concept of sustainability is examined to reveal that, although embodying the meaning of sustainable development as it has evolved in the global milieu, the contemporary political-economic environment, and the stated intent of the leglislators, are contradictory and conflicting with this position. However, it is proposed that the legislative wording is capable of interpretation to encompass the wider meaning of sustainable development. How the legislation is interpreted by courts and operationalised by planners and administrators will largely determine whether it, in fact, contributes to the developing world view, and whether it represents a paradigm shift in the New Zealand context. This in turn will determine whether sustainable management can provide a legitimate representation of the common good in New Zealand." -- Abstract (page iii).

Central topics covered include: - poverty - rural development - urban development - education - health - social work - social welfare - international development and cooperation. Social Policy for Development is an essential text for all students and practitioners alike seeking a deeper understanding of the issues of poverty, social exclusion and deprivation across social policy and development studies internationally.
