Take a tour with leading researchers and developers for a practical look at object databases. Whether you currently work with or are thinking of moving to object databases, Chaudhri and Zicari provide a collection of real-world case studies and examples that demonstrate how some of the world's leading companies and research institutions are leveraging Java, XML, and Object Relational Systems to build robust databases. Starting with a comprehensive introduction to object and object-relational databases, the book then offers detailed discussions on some of the latest topics in the field such as JDBC and SQLJ support in relational databases and database modeling using UML. You'll also learn about object-to-relational mapping tools, architectural issues that influence performance, and the issues of complexity and scale. How popular tools from Computer Associates, eXcelon, GemStone, Objectivity, Oracle, Versant, and Poet were used in the case studies is also discussed. The companion Web site atwww.wiley.com/compbooks/chaudhri includes links to object-oriented database software applications and additional resources. From best-selling author and noted teacher and speaker Yehuda Berg comes a thought-provoking call to action on our current global crisis. Positing that our collective abdication of responsibility — in every facet of our lives, including business and the economy, the environment, government and politics, healthcare, education, and religion — has contributed to the problems and challenges we face, Berg asserts that taking responsibility for our actions (or lack thereof) and their consequences is the key to achieving change for the better. Berg urges readers to access the power within each of us, using the principles of Kabbalah, in order to create the consciousness shift required for lasting positive change.

Written by ODGM's C++ representative, this pragmatic guidebook is the first comprehensive introduction to programming object-oriented databases with OQL. It offers comparisons with SQL, with which readers are already familiar, as a bridge to understanding OQL and as a means of contrasting object-oriented versus relational database development.

This volume collects papers presented at the 2nd International Workshop on Object-Oriented Database Systems (ooDBS-II) held at the Ebernburg near Bad Münster am Stein, FRG, in September 1988. It thus gives a comprehensive overview of the latest developments in this flourishing area of current database research. Object-oriented database systems have been approached with mainly two major intentions in mind, namely to better support new application areas like CAD/CAM, office automation, knowledge engineering, and to overcome the 'impedance mismatch' between data models and programming languages. The notion of object-orientation in database systems is thus a broader one than e.g. in the area of programming languages. Structural object-orientation provides for data model mechanisms that allow the direct representation and manipulation of highly-structured entities; behavioral object-orientation cares for facilities to associate arbitrary user-defined type-specific operations with data entities; finally, full object-orientation tries to combine the advantages of both categories. Though data model concepts are the decisive feature of object-oriented database systems, numerous other system aspects have to be reconsidered or allow better solutions, respectively, in this light. They include e.g. transactions, implementation techniques, optimization, formalization, the inclusion of rules, and the integration with other systems. A number of research prototypes and even some commercial systems are meanwhile available. Both, approaches to extend databases with object-oriented capabilities and approaches to extend object-oriented programming languages with database features have been and are being investigated.
