The increasing need to protect civilian infrastructure and industrial facilities against unintentional loads arising from accidental impact and explosion events as well as terrorist attacks is of major importance. While advances have been made in recent years, many challenges remain, such as to develop more effective and efficient blast and impact mitigation approaches than those that currently exist. The primary focus remains the survivability of physical facilities and the protection of people, as well as reducing economic losses and impact on the environment, with emphasis on innovative protective technologies to support the needs of an economically growing, modern society. The application of this technology ranges from the safe transportation of people and dangerous materials to defences against natural hazards such as floods, wind, storms, tsunamis and earthquakes. Large scale testing is prohibitive and small scale laboratory testing results in scaling uncertainties. Continuing research is therefore essential to improve knowledge on how these structures behave under a variety of load actions, some of which interact making it even more complex and difficult to define. Consequently, more use of advanced numerical simulations for load and structural response calculations is common practice in industry and research. Such calculations can directly be used in design and risk assessment calculations, but also be applied to more simplified design tools and design codes. Whether numerical or analytical modelling techniques are employed, experimental validation is vital for there to be acceptance of the approach to be used. The included papers, presented at the 16th International Conference on Structures under Shock and Impact, highlight new research ideas and results to promote a better understanding of the critical issues relating to the testing behaviour, modelling and analyses of protective structures against blast and impact loading.

Dynamics In The Practice Of Structural Design written by Oscar Sircovich-Saar and has been published by WIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This book is a practitioner-friendly approach to dynamics on structural design, oriented to facilitate understanding of complicated issues without their elaborate mathematical formulations. While the chapters follow logically from one another, each one deals independently with a subject in structural dynamics; this approach allows the engineer to go directly to the topic of his or her interest at a given moment.Throughout each chapter the reader will find the text set in two different forms, for different levels of the topic in consideration, which will enable him to postpone for a second reading deeper explanations.Conceived as practical support for engineers whenever they want to review a subject related to dynamics in the practice of structural design, this book can be of great help for students of engineering.

Computational Mechanics For Heritage Structures written by B. Leftheris and has been published by WIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006 with Science categories.

Reflecting the authors' extensive experience, and describing the results of projects they have worked on, this book deals with applications of advanced computational mechanics techniques in structural analysis, strength rehabilitation and aseismic design of monuments, historical buildings and related structures. The results are given with clear explanations so that civil and structural engineers, architects and archaeologists, and students of these disciplines can understand how to evaluate the structural worthiness of heritage buildings without the use of difficult mathematics.

Plasticity Of Cold Worked Metals written by A. Paglietti and has been published by WIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with Science categories.

Plasticity theory is a tool used in structural analysis to evaluate the ultimate strength and the post-elastic behavior of ductile structures, explains Paglietti (strength of metals and engineering, U. of Cagliari, Italy), but its application to real materials is undermined by the evolution law of the yield surface, also known as the work-hardening

This unique compendium contains a vast systematized data of 14,000 experiments on high-velocity penetration into metals, concrete, reinforced concrete, and geological media which were published in the open literature (journal papers, reports, conference proceedings) during the last 70 years. Data presented in this edition are related to the initial and final stages of penetration and include: parameters which characterize mechanical and geometric properties of the striker and the shield; striking and residual velocities of projectile or depth of penetration; changes of mass and size of projectile; angles that determine the initial and residual position of the projectile; ballistic limit velocity; basic characteristics of plug and deformation of the shield.Unified form of data representation and common notations are used throughout the book. All information is presented in numerical form in SI units. The book also contains indices which allow a fast search of the authors' publications and related experiments. Theoreticians, design engineers and experimentalists will find this handbook a valuable reference material.

The Art Of Resisting Extreme Natural Forces written by Santiago Hernández and has been published by WIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with Technology & Engineering categories.

According to the ancient Greeks, nature was composed of four elements: air, fire, water and earth. Engineers are continuously faced with the challenges imposed by those elements, when designing bridges and tall buildings to withstand high winds; constructing fire resistant structures, controlling flood and wave forces; minimizing earthquake damage; prevention and control of landslides and a whole range of other natural forces. Natural disasters occurring in the last few years have highlighted the need to achieve more effective and safer designs against extreme natural forces. At the same time, structural projects have become more challenging. Featuring contributions from the First International Conference on Engineering Nature, this book addresses the problems associated in this field and aims to provide solutions on how to resist extreme natural forces. Topics include: Hurricane, Tornadoes and High Winds; Aerodynamic Forces; Fire Induced Forces; Wave Forces and Tsunamis; Landslides and Avalanches; Earthquakes; Volcanic Activities; Bridges and Tall Buildings; Large Roofs and Communication Structures; Underground Structures; Dams and Embankments; Offshore Structures; Industrial Constructions; Coastal and Maritime Structures; Risk Evaluation; Surveying and Monitoring; Risk Prevention; Remediation and Retrofitting and Safety Based Design.
