Diploma Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject Business economics - Information Management, grade: 2, Campus02 University of Applied Sciences Graz, language: English, abstract: The IT-market has been growing dramatically in the last 15 years. Software tries to solve complex problems of the real world. In addition, customers’ expectations concerning the quality of the software are rising steadily. Therefore, testing the software before it is delivered to a customer is a necessity. While testing software completely is impossible, the test department must use techniques in order to test critical parts in the software first. Furthermore, the test department has to provide best possible information about the quality of the software achieved through passing several tests. This requirement can be met only if testing is a structured and monitored process. This thesis presents the implementation of an approach which understandsstructured software testing as an integrated part of the software development life-cycle. The approach is based on several established models from software development, quality assurance, and software testing. These models are discussed together with different commercial, in-house, and Open Source tools used for the implementation of the approach. A framework is described for automated test execution, test results processing, archiving of test data, and web based test data management. An example is given where this framework has been introduced to a software company. Based on a specific quality approach the measurable quality improvement of the test process due to the introduction of the framework is presented.

The software development world has changed significantly in the past five years. Noteworthy among its many changes is the emergence of the "Unified Modeling Language" (UML) as an industry standard. While thousands of software computer professionals and students continue to rely upon the bestselling first edition of Software Testing, the time has come to bring it up to date. Thoroughly revised, the second edition of Software Testing: A Craftsman's Approach reflects the recent growth and changes in software standards and development. Outdated material has been deleted and new topics, figures, case studies now complement its solid, accessible treatment of the mathematics and techniques of software testing. Foremost among this edition's refinements is the definition of a generalized pseudocode that replaces the outdated Pascal code used in the examples. The text is now independent of any particular programming language. The author has also added five chapters on object-oriented testing, incorporated object-oriented versions of two earlier examples, and used them in the chapter on object-oriented testing, which he completely revised with regard to UML. In addition, GUI testing receives full treatment. The new edition of Software Testing provides a comprehensive synthesis of the fundamentals, approaches, and methods that form the basis of the craft. Mastering its contents will allow practitioners to make well-informed choices, develop creative solutions, and ultimately derive the sense of pride and pleasure that a true craftsperson realizes from a job well done.

The major purpose of this special issue is to highlight the topic of expert thinking. The issue samples the diversity of domains of expertise and includes a good sample of paradigms and methods, with articles that involve think aloud problem solving tasks, computer simulations, and traditional learning or memory tasks. It also has articles that illustrate the diversity of settings in which expertise is practised and can be studied, ranging from the traditional psychology laboratory to cognition in "the wild". Reasoning is generally regarded as an aggregate of fundamental processes that are involved in such complex behaviours as decision-making, planning, and problem solving. Are complex reasoning processes per se the defining hallmark of expertise? Articles in this special issue particularly highlight ways in which reasoning does depend on memory, e.g., for musical scores (Chaffin & Imreh) and for chess games (Gobet), and does become more efficient over time (Clarke & Lamberts). However, experts also use quite general strategies, such as hypothesis testing and the combination of forward and backward chaining (Clarke & Lamberts, Ball, Evans, Dennis & Ormerod).

Over 12 years ago Logica started the development of TestFrame®, a test method which enables organizations to develop and execute their tests in a structured way. Since then many new techniques have been developed, such as, most recently, "Service Oriented Architectures (SOAs)" or "Software as a Service (SaaS)" , requiring updates to test procedures and processes that seemed well-established. These trends have prompted Logica to update and renew the TestFrame® method. Chris Schotanus’ new book takes into account the recent developments and his presentation is focused on supporting daily test practice. Every step within this structured test method is dealt with exhaustively, providing the reader with the necessary details for successful software testing. Yet his book will not only help test personnel to improve effectivity, it will also serve as a way to improve efficiency through its strong focus on reuse. This makes TestFrame the practical guide to testing information systems for everyone involved in software testing – test developers, test managers, and staff charged with quality assurance.
