Statistical methods in modern research increasingly entail developing, estimating and testing models for data. Rather than rigid methods of data analysis, the need today is for more flexible methods for modelling data. In this logical, easy-to-follow and exceptionally clear book, David Flora provides a comprehensive survey of the major statistical procedures currently used. His innovative model-based approach teaches you how to: Understand and choose the right statistical model to fit your data Match substantive theory and statistical models Apply statistical procedures hands-on, with example data analyses Develop and use graphs to understand data and fit models to data Work with statistical modeling principles using any software package Learn by applying, with input and output files for R, SAS, SPSS, and Mplus. Statistical Methods for the Social and Behavioural Sciences: A Model Based Approach is the essential guide for those looking to extend their understanding of the principles of statistics, and begin using the right statistical modeling method for their own data. It is particularly suited to second or advanced courses in statistical methods across the social and behavioural sciences.

The Preface Elucidates That The Text Is Designed For Degree Courses In India. However, I Imagine That It Could Play A Useful Role For Those In Britain. It Is Mainly Intended As An Introductory Text For Those Studying Social Sciences And Economics. Individuals From Other Disciplines Would, No Doubt, Still Find It Useful As A General Reference. The Chapters Are Well Written And Easy To Follow. An Appealing Feature Of The Book Is That Much Emphasis Is Placed On The Understanding And Application Of Statistical Methods. There Is Avoidance Of Excessive Presentation Of Formulae. For These Reasons Alone I Think That Students Will Find The Text Attractive. Each Chapter Finishes With A Series Of Well-Formulated Questions, Which Test The Readers' Understanding. The Two Chapters On Statistical Inference And Tests Of Significance Are Excellent. It Is A Comprehensive And Interesting Text, One That I Think Most Students Would Find Useful. Indeed, It Is An Useful Addition To My Library, Having Already Referred To It Often. The Statistician, London, Vol. 45, No. 3 (1996).

This textbook systematically presents fundamental methods of statistical analysis: from probability and statistical distributions, through basic concepts of statistical inference, to a collection of methods of analysis useful for scientific research. It is rich in tables, diagrams, and examples, in addition to theoretical justification of the methods of analysis introduced. Each chapter has a section entitled “Exercises and Problems” to accompany the text. There are altogether about 300 exercises and problems, answers to the selected problems are given. A section entitled “Proof of the Results in This Chapter” in each chapter provides interested readers with material for further study.

Statistical Methods: An Introduction to Basic Statistical Concepts and Analysis, Second Edition is a textbook designed for students with no prior training in statistics. It provides a solid background of the core statistical concepts taught in most introductory statistics textbooks. Mathematical proofs are deemphasized in favor of careful explanations of statistical constructs. The text begins with coverage of descriptive statistics such as measures of central tendency and variability, then moves on to inferential statistics. Transitional chapters on z-scores, probability, and sampling distributions pave the way to understanding the logic of hypothesis testing and the inferential tests that follow. Hypothesis testing is taught through a four-step process. These same four steps are used throughout the text for the other statistical tests presented including t tests, one- and two-way ANOVAs, chi-square, and correlation. A chapter on nonparametric tests is also provided as an alternative when the requirements cannot be met for parametric tests. Because the same logical framework and sequential steps are used throughout the text, a consistency is provided that allows students to gradually master the concepts. Their learning is enhanced further with the inclusion of "thought questions" and practice problems integrated throughout the chapters. New to the second edition: Chapters on factorial analysis of variance and non-parametric techniques for all data Additional and updated chapter exercises for students to test and demonstrate their learning Full instructor resources: test bank questions, Powerpoint slides, and an Instructor Manual
