The crucial role of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in hospice and palliative settings receives a long-overdue focus in End-of-Life Care Considerations for the Speech-Language Pathologist, the fifth volume in Plural’s Medical Speech-Language Pathology book series. Seasoned clinicians provide a practical guide to the terminology, context, and knowledge needed to employ best practices and address the specific needs of patients nearing the end of life. As a profession, speech-language pathology focuses primarily on rehabilitation, with the expectation that patients’ function will improve with intervention. For patients with life-limiting conditions, SLPs play an important role in supporting patients’ communication, cognition, eating, drinking, and swallowing with an emphasis on quality of living. Clinical professionals require tailored resources to develop their knowledge and skills related to appropriate care and treatment in hospice and palliative care contexts, which have been hard to find until now. Nearly all patients experience difficulties with communication and eating as they near the end of life. Patients, family members, and professionals benefit if the patient can communicate their symptoms, indicate the effectiveness of symptom management strategies, participate in setting care goals, and engage in social-emotional and spiritual conversations with family and members of the care team. This book provides SLP professionals guidance in how to offer meaningful assessments and interventions that meet patients’ needs. The book contains case examples together with the latest research and contributing clinicians’ years of experience. Supported by these effective and thoughtful strategies, SLPs can offer both comfort and care for patients in their final days. Key Features: * An overview of and introduction to the key concepts and benefits of hospice and palliative care * Guidance on terminology and standard models of end-of-life care * Adult and pediatric case studies with frequently encountered scenarios * Chapters authored by a renowned team of contributors * Discussion of legal and ethical considerations * Practical techniques and strategies for assessment and intervention

Set against the context of a changing professional landscape, this book examines the journey of the authors, Jo and Diana, as they transitioned from working in the National Health Service (NHS) to setting up an independent practice following redundancy. Highlighting both the benefits and challenges, the authors outline the steps they took to move from survival mode and crisis management to a position of stability and success. This book provides readers with a wealth of practical advice, helping them to avoid pitfalls and seize opportunities with confidence when establishing their own independent practice. It also touches on the fall-out from redundancy – pertinent to any job, anywhere. Chapters explore a variety of topics, including but not limited to: The national context, implications for setting up an independent practice and business models Practical considerations: financial management, contracts, governance, technology, creating a team and models of clinical service delivery Assessing success and identifying areas for improvement; measuring impact, troubleshooting and looking to the future Written in an entertaining yet informative manner, with the voices of other experienced professionals drawn on throughout in the form of personal stories and specialist contributions, this book is essential reading for speech and language therapists (and others) considering going down the independent route.

Critical Perspectives On Social Justice In Speech Language Pathology written by Horton, RaMonda and has been published by IGI Global this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-06-25 with Social Science categories.

There is very little discussion of socially just approaches to speech-language pathology. Within other fields of clinically-oriented practice, social justice is a topic that has received a great deal of attention within the last few years. Pedagogy for addressing social justice has been developed in other disciplines. The field of communication disorders has failed to move forward and do the same. Discussion of social justice is important given the current sociopolitical climate and landscape that clients carry out in their day-to-day functioning. Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) have an opportunity to engage in practices that help address and alleviate some of the injustices that contribute to educational and health disparities experienced by communities of color. They may do this through the development and application of a socially just orientation of culturally competent practice that fosters changes beyond the individual level. Adapting such a framework makes it possible for SLPs to effectively advocate for and foster equity and inclusion for the individuals and broader communities impacted by SLP services. Critical Perspectives on Social Justice in Speech-Language Pathology addresses the socio-political contexts of how the field of speech-language pathology and service delivery can impact policy and debates related to social justice issues. It explores social position factors and the experiences of marginalized communities to explore how speech-language pathologists deliver services, train and prepare students, and carry out research in communities of color. It covers topic areas including disproportionality in special education, disability rights and ableism, achievement and opportunity gaps, health disparities, and LGBTQ+ rights with a focus on voice, communication, and gender-diverse populations. This book is essential for speech-language pathologists, administrators, practitioners, researchers, academicians, and students interested in how the SLP profession and discipline can contribute to or develop efforts to help address injustices faced by Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) communities.
