Sport in Canada is as old as Aboriginal culture and as current as Hockey Night in Canada. In this comprehensive book, Don Morrow and Kevin B. Wamsley trace the history of sport from its earliest beginnings through to the creation of the first sporting clubs and into the form we recognizetoday. The perception of sports figures as celebrities and its impact on Canadian culture, from the marketing of Barbara ann Scott dolls to the shock and disappointment felt across Canada at the results of Ben Johnson's drug test results in 1988, is analyzed in detail. The authors provide ananalysis that demonstrates the centrality of sport to Canadian identity while also exploring the influence of factors such as race, class, and gender on the experience of sport in Canada.

Over the last 50 years, the struggles to achieve equity in sport have become central to the feminist mission. This book contains an inspiring collection of stories from the women on the front lines: athletes, coaches, educators, and activists for women's sport, who have done so much to foster change. Many of the women profiled here reflect on their tough beginnings in sport: being isolated and unconnected, competing in makeshift settings, training alone, and inadequate equipment. But they also reflect on the joy of movement, teamwork, and competition. These women grew to be remarkable role models and helped to dismantle sexism in sport. To read these stories is to swell with pride over their victories, to empathize with their battles with discrimination, and to become re-energized to confront collectively the many hurdles left to clear.

Active Canadian government in sport is recent. Even after the passage of the Fitness and Amateur Sport Act in 1961, government activity was limited to small grants to national sport governing bodies and cost-sharing agreements with the provinces aimed at increasing participation in sport. By the end of the 1960s sport had come to be seen as an instrument which could be used to promote national unity. Government involvement increased, and by the 1980s the federal government was pouring increasing funds into the support of elite athletes and the construction of sports facilities.
