This contract was for the purpose of building 128xl28 pixel spatial light modulator capable of phase-only modulation using TI's unique flexure beam deformable mirror device (DMD) technology. The flexure beam DMD contains mirror elements that move vertically in response to an electrostatic force. The resulting piston-like motion provides broad range analog phase modulation with minimal amplitude modulation. Problems in the CCD addressing prevented the completion and delivery of a fully functioning device. The performance characteristics of three unique optically-addressed spatial light modulator (SLM) structures were investigated. The measured parameters included maximum resolution, visibility, imaging response time, and write light sensitivity. The modulators investigated include two relatively new technologies: the ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) SLM from the University of Colorado-Boulder and the amorphous silicon photoconductive twisted nematic liquid crystal SLM from GEC-Marconi Research, and the Hughes Liquid Crystal Light Valve (LCLV), which is a well established industry benchmark. This report is a compilation of the operating parameters and performance of these three modulators. Investigated parameters are conductive to understanding these modulators as input image transducers in optical correlator architectures.

The objective of our research is to demonstrate 'smart' spatial light modulators (S-SLM) where electronic logic circuits are combined with light modulators and detectors. Our previous studies, while providing valuable insights, indicated that shortcomings of certain approaches limit their applicability to combine Si-based driver and logic circuits with PLZT modulators. For example, PLZT substrate damage limited laser recrystallization approach. Lastly, voltage compatibility problem exists that imposes difficulties in the integration of the modulator driver circuit (requiring 30-50V) in the Si- waver containing logic circuits (operating at 5V). In order to resolve these limitations we explored (1) two methods of implementing thin films of Si-band driver circuits directly onto PLZT substrates and (2) flip-chip bonding of Si wafer containing detector and logic circuits onto the silicon bonded directly to bulk PLZT substrate for fabrication of S-SLM.

Two spatial light modulators (SLMs) are utilized for beam splitting, steering and tracking. Both linear and holographic phase screens are used in a demonstration of technology to allow real time tracking to communicate in a one-to-several type scenario. One SLM is used to apply a linear phase modulation to steer multiple beams onto a detector. The spots that are produced represent the targets as they move around the field of view of the central communication node. A Gerchberg-Saxton algorithm will subsequently use the detected spots as the desired pointing locations. Using this as input, the Gerchberg-Saxton algorithm yields a phase only map for multiple spot beam steering which is called the holographic phase. The holographic phase screens are then used on a second SLM to steer beams onto the same detector in near real time. As the target spots move about the detector's field of view, the holographic spots track them.
