This introduction to one of the liveliest and most popular fields in philosophy is written specifically for a beginning readership with no background in philosophy or science. Step-by-step analyses of the key arguments are provided and the philosophical heart of the issues is revealed without recourse to jargon, maths, or logical formulas. The book introduces Einstein's revolutionary ideas in a clear and simple way, along with the concepts and arguments of philosophers, both ancient and modern that have proved of lasting value. Specifically, the theories of the ancient Greek philosophers, Zeno, Euclid and Parmenides are considered alongside the ideas of Newton, Leibniz and Kant as well as the giants of twentieth-century physics, Einstein and Lorentz. The problems at the heart of the philosophy of space and time, such as change, motion, infinity, shape, and inflation, are examined and the seismic impact made by relativity theory and quantum theory is assessed in the light of the latest research. The writing is lucid and entertaining, allowing a beginning readership to grasp some difficult concepts while offering the more experienced reader a succinct and illuminating presentation of the state of the debate. "Space, Time and Einstein" shows the reader the excitement of scientific discovery and the beauty of theory in the search for answers to these fundamental questions.

Exact Space Times In Einstein S General Relativity written by Jerry B. Griffiths and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-10-15 with Science categories.

Einstein's theory of general relativity is a theory of gravity and, as in the earlier Newtonian theory, much can be learnt about the character of gravitation and its effects by investigating particular idealised examples. This book describes the basic solutions of Einstein's equations with a particular emphasis on what they mean, both geometrically and physically. Concepts such as big bang and big crunch-types of singularities, different kinds of horizons and gravitational waves, are described in the context of the particular space-times in which they naturally arise. These notions are initially introduced using the most simple and symmetric cases. Various important coordinate forms of each solution are presented, thus enabling the global structure of the corresponding space-time and its other properties to be analysed. The book is an invaluable resource both for graduate students and academic researchers working in gravitational physics.

An enlightening introduction to the philosophy of time and space. J.B. Kennedy offers an introduction to one of the liveliest and most popular fields in philosophy - time and space - aimed specifically at a beginning readership with no background in philosophy or science. He goes to the philosophical heart of the issues without recourse to jargon, mathematics, or logical formulas and introduces Einstein's revolutionary ideas in a clear and simple way, as well as concepts and arguments of other relevant philosophers, both ancient and modern. Current debates in philosophy and physics are also handled with exemplary clarity and Kennedy is able to provide readers with a real sense of where we have come from and where we are going. The writing is engaging, lively, and entertaining and serves to introduce the subject to beginning students as well as providing a clear statement of the state of the debate for a popular science readership. Kennedy covers such topics as Einstein's special and general relativity, how to build an atom bomb, the four-dimensional universe, the possibility of time travel, the impossibility of motion, whether space curves, the big bang, black holes, and the idea of inflationary and accelerating universes.

Albert Einstein, together with Theodor Kaluza and Oskar Klein, realized that extra dimensions can be used to unify the different fields of physics, as well as unifying the fields with their material sources. In fact, it was Einstein's dream to transpose the “base wood” of the matter term in his field equations to the “marble” of the geometrical term. During his lifetime, this kind of unified theory achieved only partial success. But the modern approach, outlined in this bestseller, is elegant and agrees with all the classical tests. The basic idea is to unify the source and its field using the rich algebra of higher-dimensional Riemannian geometry. In other words, space, time and matter become parts of geometry.

A truly Galilean-class volume, this book introduces a new method in theory formation, completing the tools of epistemology. It covers a broad spectrum of theoretical and mathematical physics by researchers from over 20 nations from four continents. Like Vigier himself, the Vigier symposia are noted for addressing avant-garde, cutting-edge topics in contemporary physics. Among the six proceedings honoring J.-P. Vigier, this is perhaps the most exciting one as several important breakthroughs are introduced for the first time. The most interesting breakthrough in view of the recent NIST experimental violations of QED is a continuation of the pioneering work by Vigier on tight bound states in hydrogen. The new experimental protocol described not only promises empirical proof of large-scale extra dimensions in conjunction with avenues for testing string theory, but also implies the birth of the field of unified field mechanics, ushering in a new age of discovery. Work on quantum computing redefines the qubit in a manner that the uncertainty principle may be routinely violated. Other breakthroughs occur in the utility of quaternion algebra in extending our understanding of the nature of the fermionic singularity or point particle. There are several other discoveries of equal magnitude, making this volume a must-have acquisition for the library of any serious forward-looking researchers.

Space, Time and Einstein by J. B. KennedyThis book is a threefold invitation to the philosophy of space andtime. It introduces - gently and simply - the new, revolutionary ideasof Einstein. It introduces the concepts and arguments of philosophers, both ancient and modern, which have proved of lasting value. Finally,it introduces the most recent discoveries and the debates raging now,in philosophy and physics, and points out how future developmentsmay unfold. The text does aim to teach one skill. Careful thinking is at the coreof our conception of philosophy. Now that many nations havereorganized themselves as democracies, which depend so much onreasoned debate and persuasion, careful thinking has become afoundation of our social and political lives as well. But clear thinkingis an art: it requires patience, practice and cultivation. This text doesnot teach or use formal logic, but it pays great attention to the careful analysis and interpretation of ideas. It slows down to dissect moment-ous claims and seeks out the hidden assumptions underlying the greatarguments of the past. It aims throughout to show how the analysis ofarguments deepens our appreciation of philosophy, and points theway towards future progress. This is a conservative text in the sense that it covers the standardtopics, outlines mainstream debates and introduces the views of someleading contemporary philosophers. Unusually, from the outset, itemphasizes the controversy between Einstein and Lorentz over theinterpretation of relativity (following essays by J. S. Bell and the moremathematical text by D. Bohm), which is now again a hot topic ofdebate. For accessibility, I have edited the quotations to conform to auniform terminology, ruthlessly preferred concrete over technicalterms (e.g. "rulers and clocks" rather than "reference frames") andpostponed all spacetime diagrams to an appendix. In general, I havefavoured bold, plausible claims and used the guide for further readingin Appendix E to point toward more advanced and nuanced litera-ture. This approach has worked well in courses I have taught atStanford University and the University of Notre Dame in the US andthe University of Manchester in the UK. There was no room forchapters on debates over space and time in the feminist philosophy ofscience and in art history, but some reference.
