"Acclaimed home-grown photographer, Jodi Bieber has created an open-ended essay which is a celebration and a portrait of life in Soweto today. The importance of Soweto in the collective consciousness is hard to overstate. It registers as a place born of resistance, perhaps even embodying the South African struggle for freedom. But the birth of Kwaito is attributed to Soweto too. And beyond the grand narratives, there is and always was a proliferation of dancing, art and fashion in this place defined by its energy and cosmopolitan nature. Labelling and un-labelling, claiming and discarding, Sowetans have created Soweto anew - a phenomenon that is celebrated in this photographic publication which contemplates daily lived realities where here, as elsewhere, South Africans are continually reinventing themselves and their urban space."--Publisher's website.

A memoir of a white official in South Africa’s largest black ‘city’ in the aftermath of the 1976 uprising, Grinker’s Inside Soweto is a revelation. A view from within the ‘system’, too radical for the conservatives and too conservative for the radicals, Inside Soweto came out in 1986, only to be rapidly sold out – and conveniently forgotten. This new, revised edition features an epilogue written by Grinker in 2014. It also contains rare photos from the author’s collection. ‘A very interesting commentary on the situation’ Bowen Northrup, editor, The Wall Street Journal

The Soweto Uprisings written by Sifiso Ndlovu and has been published by Pan Macmillan South africa this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-05-22 with Political Science categories.
When the Soweto uprisings of June 1976 took place, Sifiso Mxolisi Ndlovu, the author of this book, was a 14-year-old pupil at Phefeni Junior Secondary School. With his classmates, he was among the active participants in the protest action against the use of Afrikaans as a medium of instruction. Contrary to the generally accepted views, both that the uprisings were ‘spontaneous’ and that there were bigger political players and student organisations behind the uprisings, Sifiso’s book shows that this was not the case. Using newspaper articles, interviews with former fellow pupils and through his own personal account, Sifiso provides us with a ‘counter-memory’ of the momentous events of that time. This is an updated version of the book first published by Ravan Press in 1998. New material has been added, including an introduction to the new edition, as well as two new chapters analyzing the historiography of the uprisings as well as reflecting on memory and commemoration as social, cultural and historical projects.

A fascinating look at the vicious aftermath of the uprising of 16 June 1976, and the role of the African National Congress, the United Democratic Front, the Inkatha Freedom Party, the National Party and other role players in the story of this unique place of laughter and suffering. The plight of scholars and students, the Defiance Campaign, the move to armed struggle, the State of Emergency, the grip of crime and violent confrontation were all to take their toll on the people of the township before the era of reform promised that long-awaited freedom - for both the people of Soweto and the rest of the nation.

The Urban Foundation, registered as an association not for gain, was established following a conference on the quality of life in urban areas in November 1976, which was attended by many of South Africa's leading businessmen and community leaders. Its objectives are to work with urban residents to improve their quality of life, acting as a catalyst by mobilising the resources of the private sector, involving communities and gaining the co-operation of the authorities. Soweto is the largest urban Black community in South Africa. The Urban Foundation sees its role as one of helping this community solve its problems by bringing it together with the private sector in projects, and by lobbying for appropriate policy and procedure changes at all levels of Government.
