Even before the East African country of Sudan became independent from British rule in 1956, the people of this region were fighting among themselves. For nearly all of Sudan's modern history the country has been devastated by civil wars. The first war between the Arab-dominated government in the North and rebel groups in the South lasted from 1955 to 1972. The second began in 1983 and ended in 2005, when a power-sharing agreement was signed. As part of that agreement, a referendum was held in January 2011 in which the residents of Southern Sudan voted to break away and form a new country. On July 9, 2011, the country officially became independent as the Republic of South Sudan. Despite the optimism of independence, today both the countries of Sudan and Southern Sudan have many problems. Most of the people of Sudan and Southern Sudan are desperately poor and suffer from famines, fighting, and human-rights abuses by government and rebel forces.

Few studies have looked into the governance of universities in societies affected by armed conflicts, because they are either meant for practitioners or focused on the role of universities for peace and development. Akiiki Babyesiza offers an in-depth analysis of the relationship between state, higher education, and society in a multicultural and multi-religious post-conflict setting and uses empirical data to question university governance concepts. She explores the role that civil wars played in university development and governance in Sudan with a particular focus on Southern Sudan after the peace agreement of 2005 and before its secession in 2011.

Sudan's post-independence history has been dominated by political and civil strife. Most commentators have attributed the country's recurring civil war to either to an age-old racial divide between Arabs and Africans , or to recent colonially constructed inequalities. This book attempts a more complex analysis, briefly examining the historical, political, economic and social factors which have contributed to periodic outbreaks of violence between the state and its peripheries. In tracing historical continuities, it outlines the essential differences between the modern Sudan's first civil war in the 1960s and the current war. It also looks at the series of minor civil wars generated by, and contained within, the major conflict, as well as the regional and international factors - including humanitarian aid - which have exacerbated civil violence. This introduction is aimed at students of North-East Africa, and of conflict and ethnicity. It should be useful for people in aid and international organizations who need a straightforward analytical survey.

This is the first ever historical dictionary of South Sudan as an independent nation. It focuses on the events, peoples, and cultures of South Sudan that were once treated as marginal to the grand narrative of Sudanese national history, but without disentangling South Sudan from wider historical connections across the Nile Valley and Northeast Africa. With an interpretive introduction by the three authors, it offers new perspectives on historical events and personalities, extensive coverage of recent events and current affairs, short biographies of leading social and political figures, an extensive chronology, a comprehensive bibliography, and maps based on current research illustrating specific issues confronting the new nation. Building on the classical anthropological and historical studies of South Sudanese peoples as well as new research, especially by South Sudanese authors, it provides a foundation on which to build new research on South Sudan and new perspectives on its shared history with Sudan and the wider region. Historical Dictionary of South Sudan contains a chronology, an introduction, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has more than 500 cross-referenced entries on important personalities as well as aspects of the country’s politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent resource for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about South Sudan.

The Politics Of Two Sudans written by Deng D. Akol Ruay and has been published by Nordic Africa Institute this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1994 with History categories.
This book gives a vivid account of the political history of Sudan from 1821 to 1969. It shows why Sudan is in reality two Sudans, which differ in every substantive aspect: geographical, ethnic, cultural, and religious. North and South Sudan became one sovereign state by colonial fiat. Since 1821 the Turko-Egyptian rules in Sudan sealed the fate of the Southern people. From that time onwards Southern Sudan has been laid bare to foreign intervention and influence. The Southern Sudanese have experienced all kinds of exploitation, including the slave trade, subjection to alien cultures and religions, colonialism, and finally outright annexation to the Arab North. This foreign interference was, and still is, fiercely resisted by the Southerners. This book traces, analyzes, and evaluates their protracted struggle. The analysis leads to the logical conclusion that the two Sudans will inevitably in the near future become separate, sovereign states.

South Sudan S Fateful Struggle written by Steven C. Roach and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-09-22 with Political Science categories.
In this book, Steven C. Roach addresses the effects of the South-South war in South Sudan, showing how it has troubled the transition to statehood and the transitional government of national unity. Throughout, he stresses how the government has failed to adequately promote core standards of accountability and shows how the Sudan People's Liberation Movement remained a largely militaristic organization that dominated control of the country's political destiny and became a powerful deterrent to democracy, security, justice, and national unity. Comprehensive in scope, the book represents the first systematic examination of the foundations of South Sudan's quandary both before and after its civil war. Yet it offers hope for a moral reckoning through the promising efforts to advance hybrid justice and to pressure the government to implement a truth commission, war crimes court, and reparations commission.

For many centuries, the politics of Sudan has been characterised by racial dichotomy and identity crisis, specifically between the North and the South. Added to these is the long history of domination, unfavourable policies and uneven development. The resulting marginalisation, neglect and underdevelopment has bred a series of fierce conflicts culminating in one of the longest civil wars in Africa - between the Khartoum forces and the Sudan Peoples Liberation Army (and Movement), SPLA/M. The war ended with the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in Nairobi on 9th January 2005. Unlike other publications, The Southern Sudan: Struggle for Liberty provides an in-depth view of the struggle from a veteran's perspective. Having himself lived the struggle and rising to the position of Commander in the SPLA, the author renders a story of the conflict of Southern Sudan right from the Juba Conference of 1947 and the August 1955 mutiny through the Anyanya Movements to the civil war and eventual peace. Using personal experience and accounts, he also carries with him the personalities and events that shaped the struggle and expresses his hopes and fears of the future of Southern Sudan. The events in the book are captivating, the narrative riveting and the historical perspective academically stimulating. The author's standpoint on issues is so provocative that it's bound to raffle a number of feathers in the political corridors of Southern Sudan.
