South-East Asia's economic success since the 1950s has placed very heavy demands on its natural resources and on the capacity of its environment to sustain continued development. By the end of the 1980s, there was growing concern that present forms of development are unsustainable. The United Nations University organized a conference, held at Yogyakarta, Indonesia, in 1991, which brought together close to 40 regional and foreign experts to discuss these issues. This book is based on that conference. It analyzes the driving forces of change, climatic uncertainties and a number of major issues such as deforestation, sustainability of food production, the deteriorating urban and marine environments, and the institutional problems lying in the way of better environmental management. The book presents a great deal of new information, and offers forthright discussion of a dangerous situation. In conclusion, it is argued that a basic change in the approach to development is necessary if current growth is not to rob the next generation of many of the resources which they will require. This book should be essential reading for all concerned with development and the environment in the South-East Asian region and in other tropical areas.
