The volume of W.S. Barnard is a first in a series of life-histories of the founding geographers in South Africa published by the Centre of Geographical Analysis at Stellenbosch University. Life-histories are reported in five ways: the commendation lauds the winner of an award; the obituary by necessity speaks well of the dead; the brief entry in a dictionary or encyclopedia is highly stylized and constrained by editorial guidelines; in the autobiography the author tells his own story in his own way; and, finally, the biography comes in a range of formats and structures. At the one extreme is the complete life-history, written by a specialist following the historiographical method and based on the critical assessment of primary sources; at the other is the belletristic overview: descriptive, anecdotal, facile and artful.

The idea for this special issue arose from discussions by the Council of the Society for South African Geographers in planning for the centenary of Geography in South Africa. Geography was first taught in 1914 at Victoria College which later became Stellenbosch University. The first lecturer in Geography - James Hutcheon - was appointed in 1917 at the South African School of Mines and Technology, the institution that was to become the University of the Witwatersrand. The main event marking the centenary of these founding moments is the special bi-annual conference at Stellenbosch in September 2016. In addition, the Council is celebrating the centenary of Geography in South Africa through a series of projects under three themes. Under the theme Commemorating the Past, a major project has been the production of an edited volume on the history of various geography departments in the country . [...] This SAGJ special issue falls under the theme Building and capitalizing on the present. Our intention here is to showcase some of the current research authored by South African geographers, along with research that would be of interest to South African geographers. We opted for a short review format. This rules out the possibility of an exhaustive review of subfields but nevertheless allows for a quick introduction to key themes. Our directions to authors stated that while they might wish to mention certain aspects of older literature to establish historical threads, the emphasis should be on some of the dynamic aspects of the contemporary. We pursued an inductive process. Rather than selecting people to represent subfields, we made an open call through the society mailing list for anyone to propose ideas for review articles. We were flexible in following the interests of those who responded rather than trying to cover a prescribed set of subfields. While some articles bear titles which align with orthodox undergraduate courses, not all orthodox subfields are covered. Other reviews are of a more specialized nature. Therefore, while we do not cover all subfields, we are able to generate a sense of the variety of interests that are engaging South African geographers today. The special issue raised the issue of disciplinary boundaries. On this, we wanted to recognize that 'South African Geography' is not limited to researchers based only in South African Geography departments. There are many researchers who are identified as geographers, some of whom are members of the society, but are not based in Geography departments. Furthermore, there are many geographers who take an interest in South Africa but are not based in the country. The discipline, therefore, cannot only be defined institutionally. We suggested to authors, therefore, that they were free to include the work of researchers based abroad, and researchers based in institutional settings beyond geography departments, as long as it was of potential interest to South African Geography.
