Prisons don’t work, but prisoners do. Prisons are often critiqued as unjust, but we hear little about the daily labour of incarcerated workers — what they do, how they do it, who they do it for and under which conditions. Unions protect workers fighting for better pay and against discrimination and occupational health and safety concerns, but prisoners are denied this protection despite being the lowest paid workers with the least choice in what they do — the most vulnerable among the working class. Starting from the perspective that work during imprisonment is not “rehabilitative,” this book examines the reasons why people should care about prison labour and how prisoners have struggled to organize for labour power in the past. Unionizing incarcerated workers is critical for both the labour movement and struggles for prison justice, this book argues, to negotiate changes to working conditions as well as the power dynamics within prisons themselves.

Ruddell examines the political, cultural, and social factors that contributed to the growth in incarceration in the United States from 1952 to 2000. Controlling for the influences of economic stress, violent crime, unemployment, direct outlays for assistance, the percentage of population that is black, and the percentage of males aged 15 to 29 years, Ruddell studies the influences of political disaffection, civic disengagement, and social disruption on adult imprisonment trends. The findings provide evidence of the relationships between increases in the use of punishment and cultural or political values. The results also support the proposition that the use of punishment is an inherently complex and political process.

A Priest Behind Bars is an intriguing autobiographical novel by Fr. Marcelo Blázquez Rodrigo, a Spanish Roman Catholic priest who spent over a quarter of a century in the United States as a prison chaplain and counselor on "the inside". He worked in some of the harshest maximum-security New York State correctional facilities, including Coxsackie and Comstock. Blázquez brings the fascinating stories of New York inmates into the light. Each chapter tells the story of a different prisoner, from a Vietnam vet drug addict with AIDS to a convicted rapist who nearly dies as a result of a self-imposed hunger strike in defense of his religious convictions. This book openly criticizes the New York penal system and offers exclusive insight into its inner workings from the perspective of a first hand witness of the atrocities of prison life.

The definitive history of America’s most notorious jail and the violent rise of New York City’s law-and-order movement Captives combines a thrilling account of Rikers Island’s descent into infamy with a dramatic retelling of the last seventy years of New York politics from the vantage point of the city’s jails. It is the story of a crowded field of contending powers—city bureaucrats and unions, black power activists and guards, crooked cops and elected leaders—struggling for power and influence, a tale culminating in mass incarceration and the triumph of neoliberalism. It is a riveting chronicle of how the Rikers Island of today—and the social order it represents—came to be. Conjuring sweeping cinematic vistas, Captives records how the tempo of history was set by bloody and bruising clashes between guards and prisoners, between rank and filers and union bosses, between reformers and reactionaries, and between police officers and virtually everyone else. Written by a one-time Rikers prisoner, Captives draws on extensive archival research, decades of journalism, interviews, prisoner testimonials, and firsthand experience to deliver an urgent intervention into our national discussion about the future of mass incarceration and the call to abolish prisons. The contentious debate about the future of the Rikers Island penal colony rolls onward, and Captives is a must-read for anyone interested in the island and what it represents.

Abandoned as an infant and victimized by his adoptive father, Mac began drinking heavily in his early teens. He left home at fifteen to work in the rugged and isolated logging camps of northern British Columbia, earning respect through hard work, heavy drinking, and violent confrontations with men twice his age. At eighteen he spiralled into a life of crime – arson, theft, and drug dealing – and at twenty-four he was convicted of murder and sentenced to hard time. This only deepened his addictions and criminal connections, trapping him in a cycle of recidivism. On the surface, this cycle breaks with a remarkable transformation: he battles for sobriety, turns away from crime, and becomes a revered guest lecturer at a university. Talking Reform is a conversation between sociologist Dany Lacombe and Mac. Part memoir and part ethnography, the book critically explores how the prison culture, mental health professionals, and trauma narratives affected Mac’s journey. Lacombe argues that the redemptive arc of his story oversimplifies a more complex reality. She analyzes the setbacks and failures Mac experiences as he struggles to perform the reformed version of himself, developed in collaboration with prison staff and rehabilitation professionals. She also reflects on the problematic aspects of Mac’s story – in his first-person memoir and his official prison record – and challenges the reader to focus less on his character and more on his narrative of reform. From this perspective, the reform story is a socially prescribed genre, one that compels those who have been convicted of crimes to develop unrealistic stories about themselves. Off-script Mac formed strong relationships, made significant contributions to his communities, and found unexpected ways of making meaning of his life. Exploring the complexity of managing identity inside and outside of prison walls, Talking Reform highlights ongoing struggles of reintegration and the importance of compassion and inclusion in offering hope for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated persons.

Drawing on a decade of interviews, Penn (Union Theological Center in Berkeley, California) pieces together the huge, largely unstudied contributions of the Polish women whose pro-democracy work was obscured by the more public successes of their male counterparts. While prominent men like Lech Walesa were underground or in jail during the 1980s mart
