This book contributes to the multidisciplinary debate about social–ecological systems (SES) within the perspective of rethinking the nature of interaction between these systems, especially in the Anthropocene Era. Most chapters either deliberate on risk dynamics threatening current SES or stimulate thought processes to manage such risks and related negative implications. Social-ecological systems (SES) are replete with hard and soft human-made components (or infrastructures) that are consciously-designed to perform specific functions valued by humans. How these infrastructures mediate human-environment interactions is thus a key determinant of many sustainability problems in present-day SES. This dissertation examines the question of how some of the designed aspects of physical and social infrastructures influence the robustness of SES under global change. Due to the fragility of rural livelihood systems, locally-managed common-pool resource systems that depend on infrastructure, such as irrigated agriculture and community forestry, are of particular importance to address this sustainability question. This dissertation presents three studies that explored the robustness of communal irrigation and forestry systems to economic or environmental shocks. The first study examined how the design of irrigation infrastructure affects the robustness of system performance to an economic shock. Using a stylized dynamic model of an irrigation system as a testing ground, this study shows that changes in infrastructure design can induce fundamental changes in qualitative system behavior (i.e., regime shifts) as well as altered robustness characteristics. The second study explored how connectedness among social units (a kind of social infrastructure) influenced the post-failure transformations of large-N forest commons under economic globalization. Using inferential statistics, the second study argues that some attributes of the social connectedness that helped system robustness in the past made the system more vulnerable to undesirable transformations in the current era. The third study explored the question of how to guide adaptive management of SES for more robustness under uncertainty. This study used an existing laboratory behavioral experiment in which human-subjects tackle a decision problem on collective management of an irrigation system under environmental uncertainty. The contents of group communication and the decisions of individuals were analyzed to understand how configurations of learning-by-doing and other adaptability-related conditions may be causally linked to robustness under environmental uncertainty. The results show that robust systems are characterized by two conditions: active learning-by-doing through outer-loop processes, i.e., frequent updating of shared assumptions or goals that underlie specific group strategies, and frequent monitoring and reflection of past outcomes.

Dynamic modeling has long been a valuable tool to support the analysis of ecological and economic systems, particularly their equilibrium properties and responses to internal or external forcing. Few studies so far, however, use modeling to address processes of change over time in coupled social-ecological systems. In this contribution we explore the potential of dynamic modeling to support research and governance for adaptation and transformation in social-ecological systems (SES). We focus our assessment on resilience thinking (RT) and ecosystem stewardship (ES) as two perspectives that emphasize the need to understand and manage change in social-ecological systems. Modeling in resilience research has so far mainly been used to analyze resilience properties and regime shifts in ecological systems using generic models. Experiences from other fields such as ecology, social simulation and participatory research, however, indicate a much larger potential of modeling to support problem solving in real world contexts. We review model types and applications from these fields and align them with different tasks of RT and ES aimed at (1) enhancing understanding of SES dynamics, (2) fostering inter- and transdisciplinary knowledge integration and (3) supporting processes of societal transformation. We organize the different roles of modeling in the reference scheme MORE along the two main dimensions of developing a conceptually sound understanding of SES based in real-world contexts and facilitating processes of social learning. MORE provides guidance for the use of multiple methods to enhance our understanding of the dynamics of social-ecological systems. We argue that modeling can enhance policy making and governance in complex SES by providing approaches that are conceptually sound, based in real-world problem contexts and take multiple values and knowledge systems into account.

Despite many recent advances in sustainability science, researchers still struggle to address the key characteristics of social-ecological systems that underlie many of today's problems. Complex cross-scale dynamics and tightly interrelated social and ecological processes characterize social-ecological systems (SES). These features lead to constant change and novelty. Process philosophers argue that the difficulties of capturing these features may have their roots in our tendency to understand the world in terms of substances. This tendency is a legacy of dominant philosophical views that, although now debunked, continue to inform (albeit mostly implicitly) our explanations of reality. These philosophical views are based on the primacy of fundamental entities and stability, which is in contradiction to the continuously changing nature of SES. In this paper, we demonstrate that adopting a process-relational perspective, which focuses on nonequilibrium dynamics and relations between processes, provides novel opportunities to advance SES research. We propose concrete steps toward developing a process-relational perspective of SES and discuss how such a perspective can help us to overcome the challenges currently facing SES research.

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2024 in the subject Didactics - Politics, Political Education, grade: PhD, , course: Education Management and Administration, language: English, abstract: This thesis examines how climate resilience can be integrated into poverty reduction strategies at district scale, using Katete District, Eastern Province, Zambia, as a case study. It combines a quantitative household baseline survey (n = 1,200), geospatial exposure mapping, participatory village capacity assessments, key informant interviews and focus group discussions. The study documents spatial and social patterns of exposure, sensitivity and adaptive capacity, identifies institutional and programmatic gaps in existing poverty reduction and social protection systems, and evaluates comparative lessons from Ethiopia, Rwanda and Malawi. Findings show that repeated climate shocks exacerbate poverty through reduced agricultural productivity, asset erosion and heightened food and nutrition insecurity, with disproportionate impacts on women and youth. Current programs are fragmented and insufficiently shock responsive. The thesis proposes a set of integrated, evidence-based recommendations for Katete that combine predictable social transfers, climate smart public works, targeted CSA packages, youth green skills development and women’s asset security measures, supported by an interoperable M&E system and localized climate information services. A pilot design, monitoring framework and operational road map are presented to guide district adoption and phased scaling. The work contributes a transferable district level methodology for targeting, monitoring and evaluating climate resilient poverty reduction interventions.

The draining of the Iraqi Marshlands is an example of the reorganization of a linked social-ecological system (SES) following a collapse. The goal of this study was to examine the utility of resilience as a water management tool through a case study of the Marshlands. Using the Four-Step Framework by Walker et al. (2002), it analyzed the Marshlands through the metaphor of the adaptive cycle, explored three possible future scenarios, created two models to characterize the system, and reviewed the implications of the analysis for water management in the Marshlands and resilience. This study found that resilience, and the Framework, could offer new perspectives for managing complex SESs. However, resilience is not useful during times of intense violent conflict, like war. It also found that there are resilient pathways to help the Marshlands reorganize. However, the Marshlands are very vulnerable and require strong institutional support to keep them from disappearing.
