Standards and regulations are an integral, if easily overlooked, part of our daily life. They determine whether a plug fits into a socket, whether food is safe for human consumption or whether a bank is allowed to take deposits. They are also an indispensable part of international trade. Using new evidence from ITC databases, this report reveals how standards and regulations are holding SME competitiveness back, but crucially, what SMEs and other stakeholders can do to make standards and regulations work for, and not against, SMEs. In this report, advice targeted at SME managers is presented, as well as how Trade and Investment Support Institutions and policymakers can influence the business environment to boost competitiveness, and integration into global markets.

Small And Medium Sized Enterprises In International Economic Law written by Thilo Rensmann and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017 with Business & Economics categories.

International economic law, with its traditional focus on large multinational enterprises, is only slowly waking up to the new reality of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). In the wake of the digital revolution, smaller companies now play an important role in the economic landscape. In 2015 the UN expressly called for SMEs to have greater access to international trade and investment, and it is increasingly recognized that the integration of SMEs provides one of the keys to creating a more sustainable and inclusive global economy. As 'born global' SMEs increasingly permeate transnational supply chains, so interactions between these companies and legal policy makers proliferate. Small and Medium-sized Enterprises in International Economic Law offers the first comprehensive analysis of the interaction between SMEs and international economic law. This book presents a broad international perspective, gathering together contributions by leading experts from academia, legal practice, and international organizations. It opens up a field of enquiry into this so far unexplored dynamic and provide a touchstone for future debate. Diverse perspectives illuminate regional developments (in particular within the EU), such as State Aid and the implications of multinational free trade partnership agreements. The analysis covers a broad spectrum of international trade and investment law focusing on issues of particular interest to SMEs, such as trade in services, government procurement, and trade facilitation. The essays also examine questions of legitimacy and conduct in the global marketplace; in particular, concerns surrounding the threat posed to the interests of domestic SMEs by the growing liberalization of international trade and investment. These essays constitute essential reading for practitioners and academics seeking to navigate a previously neglected trend in international economic law.

This book examines how increasing Africa-China relations in the fields of trade, development finance and investment have impacted productive capacities and structural economic transformation in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The book argues that statistical and empirical evidence shows that China’s influence has not substantially altered the fundamentals in Africa, and instead outlines a framework of policy conclusions and recommendations to help achieve transformational growth and development. Despite increased Chinese investments in transport, energy, communications, and manufacturing, sub-Saharan Africa is yet to see tangible economic and development benefits according to the multidimensional Productive Capacities Index (PCI). External trade is dogged by the same problems as during the colonial era, with primary commodities dominating exports to China, and industrial or manufacturing products dominating imports, thereby leaving the region exposed to external economic shocks. The book considers whether there are lessons to be learned from the experience of Asian countries such as Vietnam, proposing pragmatic, coordinated, non-ideological, and non-confrontational policy approaches to development. This book will be of interest to researchers, policymakers, advisors, academics, and practitioners with an interest in development in Africa, and China’s increasing role in the continent.

This report takes stock of the evolution of global value chains (GVCs) in light of technological developments, such as robotics, big data and the Internet of Things. It discusses how these technologies are reshaping GVCs and examines the effect of these changes on labor markets in developed and developing economies and on supply chain management. The report discusses how technological developments are creating new opportunities for the participation of small and medium-sized enterprises in global value chains and reviews issues related to GVC measurement. The report is a follow-up to the first Global Value Chain Development Report, which revealed the changing nature of international trade when analyzed in terms of value chains and value-added trade.[Resumen de editor]

For Least Developed Countries (LDCs) to progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals, they need to transform the structure of their economy. This, in turn, requires entrepreneurship that innovates. The entrepreneurial landscape in LDCs is dominated by micro and small enterprises with low chances of survival and growth, and scant innovation. While LDCs are part of global value chains, these provide only limited opportunities of entrepreneurship development and upgrading. Most LDCs policies and programmes for entrepreneurship aim at job creation, poverty reduction and women and youth empowerment. For entrepreneurship to be a driving force towards structural transformation, policies need to target and support high-potential firms.
