Excerpt from Shipbuilding and Shipping Record, Vol. 10: September 13, 1917 We have before observed that the attitude of the German lines (and particularly of the Hapag) to their partners in the poo has been of an intensely aggressive character. Every opportunity was seized to make the foreign (or non-german) lines subservient to their will, not only in regard to passenger traffic but also in the matter of freight. Excerpt from Shipbuilding and Shipping Record, Vol. 6: A Journal of Shipbuilding, Marine Engineering, Docks, Harbours and Shipping; December 6, 1915 Since the introduction of high steam pressures and under superheat conditions, necessitating liberal cylinder lubrication, the presence of grease in marine boilers has become an increasing factor, and a greater menace to safety. Forced draught conditions also render the absence of grease imperative, filters and auxiliary grease separators assist in removing the oil in suspension in the feed water, but the oil in emulsion still reaches the boilers. Direct antiseptic treatment of the boiler feed water and surfaces is essential. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Shipbuilding and Shipping Record, Vol. 6: July 15, 1915 An Index to the Fifth Volume of shipbuilding and shipping record, covering the issues from January 7 to June 24, 1915, 119 presented as a Supplement to each copy of this week's issue. HE views of employers and workmen engaged on Admiralt-y work and in the manufacture of munitions of war in the Clyde industrial area have now been placed before the Central Board of Control appointed to carry out the provisions Clyde adopted under the Defence of the Realm Act for Liquor Traffic. The regulation of the liquor traffic, with a view to increasing the efficiency of the labour employed in shipbuilding, engineering, and munitio'n work. The members of the Board held a number of conferences in Glasgow last week, first with the employers of labour and then with representatives of the trade unions concerned. Perhaps the most striking feature of these conferences was the unanimity and the urgency with which the ship building and engineering employers pressed on the Board the necessity for the total prohibition of the sale of intoxicating liquors in the Clyde area during the period of the war. Several leading employers, who have never identified themselves with temperance matters in the past, are the most strenuous advocates of prohibition during the present crisis. If the Clyde has gained a certain amount 'of unenviable notoriety in respect of bad time-keeping and slack ing in the shipyards and engineering shops through drink, the blame for that certainly cannot be laid at the door of the employers, who have done all in their power to induce the Government to adopt drastic measures in dealing with the drink problem, in so far as it related to efficiency in the workshops. The attitude taken up by the trade union representatives before the Board of Control was, generally speaking, one of opposition to total' prohibition, but it is now understood that a committee representative of both employers and men will be appointed to draw up a scheme for the establish ment of canteens.
