Mommy, where do babies come from? It¿s the question every parent dreads ¿ and, worse still, it¿s just the tip of the iceberg. Just wait for What¿s a blowjob? or What¿s an orgasm? With kids being so curious and the world being so full of sex, ignoring your child¿s questions just isn¿t going to cut it ¿ and if you don¿t tell them, they¿ll (mis)inform themselves elsewhere: the internet, their social groups, or through pornography. It¿s far better to meet your children¿s questions head-on. But how? With The Sex Education Answer Book, that¿s how. Cath Hakanson has been helping people talk about sex for more than twenty years, and she¿s heard it all: every question, every fear, every doubt. Now, she¿s decided to put it all together. The Sex Education Answer Book is the definitive guide to answering your child¿s questions, whether they¿re three or fourteen. All sorts of different belief systems, lifestyles, and political values are catered for, so whether you¿re a mother who can¿t even say the word `penis¿ or a father who just needs a nudge in the right direction, you¿ll find sensibly arranged, age-suitable answers to all the questions your child is likely to ask. With chapters organized by age rather than by topic, The Sex Education Answer Book is an easy reference that will demystify sex for both parent and child.

Based on observation of sex education programmes and in-depth interviews with young people, the authors aim to understand more about adolescent's attitudes to sexuality and their sexual behaviour in order to develop policies which will meet their needs more appropriately and effectively. Issues covered in this interesting and accessible book include the ways adolescent informal culture affects sex education programmes and practice; the impact of gender inequality on sex education and safer sex behaviours; legislation and policy frameworks which effect sex education policies; the way young people see legislation and evaluate sex education programmes; and the impact health professionals can have in school sex education. The authors contend that the insights into the values and views that young people bring to bear on the sex education they receive should have an important role to play in the development of policy and practice of those involved in sex education work.

"Up-to-date and accessible, this book manages to be both theoretically subtle and attuned to the realities of classroom practice." Dr Rachel Thomson, The Open University "[This] book is a great success and provides a wealth of insights into the realities of teaching and being taught about sex and relationships." Michael Reiss, Institute of Education What are the different values and perspectives on sex and relationship education within a single secondary school? How do young people think sex education should be taught? What are the challenges facing the provision of good sex and relationship education at the classroom level and at the political level? Young people often receive mixed messages about gender and sexual relationships. When providing sex education lessons, schools should take into account different ideas and values, including the general British embarrassment over intimate matters and differing political and personal views about sex education. This book combines young people's views of sex education, schooling and parenthood, with those of teachers, school nurses and head-teachers. It brings together these varied perspectives and considers how they reveal different values, aims and agendas. The authors highlight the potential conflict between approaches to education and health, and reveal the complexity of dealing with sexuality and gender in real-life situations. Focusing on young people's identities in the classroom, contemporary theoretical approaches in the social sciences are employed to explore how gender is enacted and experienced by individuals, and how social pressures and government agendas operate at the level of the individual. This book contains original, first-hand empirical material from a detailed study of all the schools in one English city, and offers a critical analysis of broader political and cultural ideas and values. Get Real About Sex is key reading for students and professionals in education, health and the sociology of gender and sexuality.

Educating children and adolescents in public schools about sex is a deeply inflammatory act in the United States. Since the 1980s, intense political and cultural battles have been waged between believers in abstinence until marriage and advocates for comprehensive sex education. In The Sex Education Debates, Nancy Kendall upends conventional thinking about these battles by bringing the school and community realities of sex education to life through the diverse voices of students, teachers, administrators, and activists. Drawing on ethnographic research in five states, Kendall reveals important differences and surprising commonalities shared by purported antagonists in the sex education wars, and she illuminates the unintended consequences these protracted battles have, especially on teachers and students. Showing that the lessons that most students, teachers, and parents take away from these battles are antithetical to the long-term health of American democracy, she argues for shifting the measure of sex education success away from pregnancy and sexually transmitted infection rates. Instead, she argues, the debates should focus on a broader set of social and democratic consequences, such as what students learn about themselves as sexual beings and civic actors, and how sex education programming affects school-community relations.
