Abstract: "In this paper, we propose a new paradigm for network file system design, serverless network file systems. While traditional network file systems rely on a central server machine, a serverless system utilizes workstations cooperating as peers to provide all file system services. Any machine in the system can store, cache, or control any block of data. Our approach uses this location independence, in combination with fast local area networks, to provide better performance and scalability than traditional file systems. Further, because any machine in the system can assume the responsibilities of a failed component, our serverless design also provides high availability via redundant data storage. To demonstrate our approach, we have implemented a prototype serverless network file system called xFS. Preliminary performance measurements suggest that our architecture achieves its goal of scalability. For instance, in a 32-node xFS system with 32 active clients, each client receives nearly as much read or write throughput as it would see if it were the only active client."

Abstract: "This thesis presents the design of a serverless network file system, a file system that distributes its functionality among cooperating, networked machines to eliminate the central file server bottleneck found in current network file systems. In a serverless system, any machine can cache, store, or control any block of data. This location independence provides better performance and scalability than traditional file system architectures. Further, because any machine in the system can assume the responsibilities of a failed component, the serverless design can also provide higher availability. This dissertation details the design of three serverless subsystems, each of which distributes a specific piece of functionality that a traditional system would implement as part of a central server. I describe and evaluate cooperative caching, a way to coordinate client caches to replace the central server's cache. I evaluate different distributed disk storage architectures and present several improvements on previous log-structured, redundant storage systems. Finally, I present the design of a distributed management architecture that splits the control of the file system among managers while maintaining a seamless single system image. Together, these pieces form a a [sic] serverless file system that eliminates central bottlenecks. I describe the integration of these components in the context of xFS, a prototype serverless file system implementaton. Initial performance measurements illustrate the promise of the serverless approach for providing scalable file systems."

It is our pleasure to provide you with the volume containing the proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Parallel Processing and Applied Mathe- tics, which was held in Cz ̧ estochowa, a Polish city famous for its Jasna Gora Monastery, on September 7–10, 2003. The ?rst PPAM conference was held in 1994 and was organized by the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science of the Cz ̧ estochowa University of Technology in its hometown. The main idea behind the event was to provide a forum for researchers involved in applied and computational mathematics and parallel computing to exchange ideas in a relaxed atmosphere. Conference organizers hoped that this arrangement would result in cross-pollination and lead to successful research collaborations. In - dition, they hoped that the initially mostly Polish conference would grow into an international event. The fact that these assumptions were correct was proven by the growth of the event. While the ?rst conference consisted of 41 presen- tions, the conference reached 150 participants in Na l ̧ ecz ́ ow in 2001. In this way the PPAM conference has become one of the premiere Polish conferences, and de?nitely the most important one in the area of parallel/distributed computing andappliedmathematics. This year’s meeting gathered almost 200 participants from 32 countries. A strict refereeing process resulted in the acceptance of approximately 150 cont- buted presentations, while the rejection rate was approximately 33%.

Integration of fixed and portable wirele ss access into IP and ATM networks presents a cost effective and efficient way to provide seamless end to end connectivity and ubiquitous access in a market where demands on Mobile and Cellular Networks have grown rapidly and predicted to generate billions of dollars in revenue. The deployment of broadband IP based technologies over Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) and integration of IP with broadband wireless access networks (BWANs) are becoming increasingly important. In addition, fixed core IP/ATM networks are constructed with recent move to IP/MPLS over DWDM. More over, mobility introduces further challenges in the area that have neither been fully understood nor resolved in the preceding network generation. This first Conference ICN01 has been very well perceived by the International networking community. A total of 300 papers from 39 countries were submitted, from which 168 have been accepted. Each paper has been reviewed by several members of the scientific Program Committee.
