Semantics, Web services, and Web processes promise better re-use, universal interoperability and integration. Semantics has been recognized as the primary tool to address the challenges of a broad spectrum of heterogeneity and for improving automation through machine understandable descriptions. Semantic Web Services, Processes and Applications brings contributions from researchers who study, explore and understand the semantic enabling of all phases of semantic Web processes. This encompasses design, annotation, discovery, choreography and composition. Also this book presents fundamental capabilities and techniques associated with ontological modeling or services, annotation, matching and mapping, and reasoning. This is complemented by discussion of applications in e-Government and bioinformatics. Special bulk rates are available for course adoption through Publishing Editor.

The all pervasive web is influencing all aspects of human endeavour. In order to strengthen the description of web resources, so that they are more meaningful to both humans and machines, web semantics have been proposed. These allow better annotation, understanding, search, interpretation and composition of these - sources. The growing importance of these has brought about a great increase in research into these issues. We propose a series of books that will address key issues in web semantics on an annual basis. This book series can be considered as an extended journal published annually. The series will combine theoretical results, standards, and their realizations in applications and implementations. The series is titled “Advances in Web Sem- tics” and will be published periodically by Springer to promote emerging Semantic Web technologies. It will contain the cream of the collective contribution of the Int- national Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) Web Semantics Working Group; WG 2. 12 & WG 12. 4. This book, addressing the current state of the art, is the first in the series. In subsequent years, books will address a particular theme, topic or issue where the greatest advances are being made. Examples of such topics include: (i) process semantics, (ii) web services, (iii) ontologies, (iv) workflows, (v) trust and reputation, (vi) web applications, etc. Periodically, perhaps every five years, there will be a scene-setting state of the art volume.

Master's Thesis from the year 2006 in the subject Computer Science - Internet, New Technologies, grade: 1,1, University of Hagen (Institut f r Informatik), language: English, abstract: Details of a semantic annotation are outlined, both for the semantic model consisting of concepts to model the area of discourse as well as the individual model for a single service. The annotation is used to build a concrete implementation of a generic processing framework translating the annotation of a service into rules to be integrated into an OWL knowledge base rule engine. The realization is done for the Jena Semantic Web Framework, an open source library for Semantic Web application for the Java language. The realization is designed as an add-on to Jena which integrates service calls in such a way that service invocation is transparent to applications building on Jena. A discussion on optimizations, both implemented ones and realizable but not implemented ones is included. They can serve as starting points for moving the implementation from a proof of concept status to real world usability. The section finishes with some considerations on general run-time behavior. Finally the presented framework is evaluated in more detail: Firstly, a sophisticated scenario for the running example is described and shown, how automated service selection, composition and invocation is actually realized during run-time. Then the approach is evaluated with regard to services with more complex parameterizations with particular focus on the data supplied to the services and the rules generated from such complex parameterized services and whether such rules are still usable. The prime design rationale of the presented framework implementation is as a proof of concept for the approach of generically integrating Web Services as rules with Semantic knowledge bases. Therefore there is still a long way to go for a real world application to be build on the framework. At several points notes are added

A paradigm shift is taking place in computer science: one generation ago, we learned to abstract from hardware to software, now we are abstracting from software to serviceware implemented through service-oriented computing. Yet ensuring interoperability in open, heterogeneous, and dynamically changing environments, such as the Internet, remains a major challenge for actual machine-to-machine integration. Usually significant problems in aligning data, processes, and protocols appear as soon as a specific piece of functionality is used within a different application context. The Semantic Web Services (SWS) approach is about describing services with metadata on the basis of domain ontologies as a means to enable their automatic location, execution, combination, and use. Fensel and his coauthors provide a comprehensive overview of SWS in line with actual industrial practice. They introduce the main sociotechnological components that ground the SWS vision (like Web Science, Service Science, and service-oriented architectures) and several approaches that realize it, e.g. the Web Service Modeling Framework, OWL-S, and RESTful services. The real-world relevance is emphasized through a series of case studies from large-scale R&D projects and a business-oriented proposition from the SWS technology provider Seekda. Each chapter of the book is structured according to a predefined template, covering both theoretical and practical aspects, and including walk-through examples and hands-on exercises. Additional learning material is available on the book website www.swsbook.org. With its additional features, the book is ideally suited as the basis for courses or self-study in this field, and it may also serve as a reference for researchers looking for a state-of-the-art overview of formalisms, methods, tools, and applications related to SWS.

Diploma Thesis from the year 2006 in the subject Computer Science - Applied, grade: 1,0, Free University of Berlin (Institut für Informatik), language: English, abstract: Due to the heterogeneous structure of the public sector, the achievement of interoperability is a key challenge for comprehensive electronic government. Service-oriented architectures lay the foundation for flexible application integration and process-orientation through Web service composition. Semantically enriched Web services promise to increase the level of automation and to reduce integration efforts significantly. Furthermore, a relatively high degree of formality in key areas of government activities encourages the application of Semantic Web concepts. This diploma thesis presents an approach for semi-automatically supporting the design and execution of data flows within the composition of semantically described Web services that are making use of different ontologies and data representations. The approach includes a rule-based mechanism for user-transparent mediation between ontologies. In order to validate the approach, a prototypical cross-ontology Semantic Web service composition tool has been implemented to be used in eGovernment scenarios spanning multiple application domains. The essence of this thesis was presented at the European Semantic Web Conference 2006 at the Workshop on eGovernment and Semantic Web and is published in the paper.

In just a few years, service-oriented architectures (SOA) and Web services not only gained considerable interest in computer science research, they were also taken up with unanimity by all major international players in the IT industry. However, and in spite of all existing standards, in most SOA applications much human intervention is still required, for example to interpret the semantics of informal descriptions or to harmonize incompatible data schemata. Semantic Web services combine Web services communication technology with the intelligent processing of ontology-based metadata to achieve highly integrated enterprise application integration scenarios, for service look-up, schema matching, or protocol negotiation, for example. Rudi Studer and his team deliver a self-contained compendium about this exciting field, starting with the basic standards and technologies and also including advanced applications in eGovernment and eHealth. The contributions provide both the theoretical background and the practical knowledge necessary to understand the essential ideas and to design new cutting-edge applications. They address computer science students as well as researchers in academia and industry who need a concise introduction and state-of-the-art survey of current research, and the book can easily be used as the basis of a specialized course on Web services or Semantic Web applications. In addition, IT professionals will be able to assess the potential and possible benefits of this new technology.

Theworkshopintendedtobringresearchers, scientistsfrombothindustryand academics,andrepresentativesfromdi?erentcommunitiestogethertostudy,- derstand, and explore the phases that compose the lifecycle of Semantic Web processes. The workshop presented what can be achieved by the symbiotic s- thesis of two of the hottest R&D and technology application areas, Web services and the Semantic Web, as recognized at the 12th International World Wide Web conference (WWW 2003) and in the industry press. The emphasis of the workshop was mainly on Web services, Web processes and semantics which are important movements emerging in the World Wide Web. Web services and Web processes promise to ease several current infr- tructure challenges, such as data, application, and process integration. Web s- vices are truly platform-independent and allow the development of distributed, loosely coupled applications, a key characteristic for the success of dynamic Web processes.
