Canarctic has recently completed the five-year shipboard ice navigation support system (SINSS) development program, the purpose of which was to develop an ice intelligence system on board M.V. ARCTIC to enable the vessel to safely and efficiently navigate through heavy sea ice conditions. The program fostered several innovative ideas that cannot be tested on the current hardware base. Canarctic has defined the functional and hardware specifications for a second generation ice navigation system. These specifications describes the sources and format of data as well as the specific user requirements expected from a second generation ice navigation system. Phase I established the initial system design, implemented a base system, initiated radar mapping technique development, and initiated the necessary modifications of peripheral systems such as radar and navigating instruments.
